What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 1 December 2014

Welcome to another week and we hope you have all opened your advent calendars this morning! Yes, the countdown to the big day officially starts today and here at Cloud 9 Towers, in between our busy schedule, we're starting to think all things festive!

With Christmas Cards to organise for clients, parties to plan (& attend!) and the holidays looming, thank goodness for the odd mince pie and mug of mulled wine to see us through.

Which leads us nicely in our topic for this week, promotional products - and not just those for Christmas, but items that come in handy throughout the year.

As an agency we are very lucky to be bestowed with all sorts of promotional items from the many hotels and venues who visit us, or we encounter at trade shows, be in mugs, highlighters, desk pads, mouse mats, key rings, pens, calendars, memory sticks, rulers, post it notes, pads, books or even in the case of Apex Hotels, the legendary ducks!

Whilst we don't quite have a full set just yet, we are certainly on our way to claiming the elusive Wally, Earl and Bobby (Apex Hotels please take note!).

The overall Promotional Merchandise marketplace back in 2010 in the UK was estimated to be worth £722million, down from the £1billion marketplace the industry had in 2008, and whilst we haven't been able to find any more current estimates of the value from this this or even last year, we're fairly sure its probably back up and even exceeding the £1billion mark (to be honest we didn't search that hard!).

But just what makes a great promotional item and how do you do something different that will ensure the longevity of your brand in every day use? Especially if you have a set budget and want to ensure that you are investing in the right items.

Companies like Eco Incentives bring a fresh approach to promotional merchandise,
supplying promotional items and business gifts that are ecologically sound and environmentally aware. Corporate Social Responsibility is high on the agenda, with many organisations having environmental targets to meet. Eco Incentives make it a simple one-stop shop, with promotional products made from recycled, organic, sustainable or ethically sourced materials. However, not everyone will appreciate a plant you have to grow yourself, and the practicalities of some items will be lost on those who don't have a particularly green approach to promotional products.

Housed in a listed building in the centre of Leicester and a stone’s throw away from the main railway station, Extravaganza,  work with both UK and International Companies on unique promotional solutions and have something like 25,000 different items available making it almost impossible to choose! We have all seen stress balls and certainly in the last few years a variety of shapes have started to emerge, but we don't think we have ever come across the stress slice of cake. It looks uncannily like the real thing, so much so it makes us hungry. The stress slice of cake is fragranced and smells great.Mmmm!

Gordon Glenister, Director General of the BPMA, wrote an interesting insight into the UK promotional market, including buying trends, how your target audience can get an ROI on your merchandise and the future of the sector. He also delivered a valuable lesson about the best promotional item he had ever seen. "I went to Internet World over 10 years ago, and picked up what looked like a block of wood with a hole around the top. The company promoted it was Commission Junction an affiliate marketing provider. Their caption was “Sales Arriving Daily” Any clues now. Well it was a steam train whistle. Do I use it every day of course not, but Ive kept and showed it to thousands of people over the years. And that's an important point, don’t forget what I call viral merchandise – conversational products."

It seems really clear that whatever investment you do make in promotional items, you have to make sure that people keep them, talk about them and in this day and age of social media, really take your products to task.

We do wonder just who has the delightful job of organising rebrands and the recent Q Hotels acquisition of some of the DeVere Hotels must be a challenge in terms of branding.

Six of the UK’s leading golf hotels has changed hands following an agreement by Sankaty Advisors to acquire De Vere Hotels. It is believed that the American investment company has paid around £160m for the portfolio, which includes Cameron House on Lock Lomond, Slaley Hall in Northumberland, Oulton Hall, near Leeds, Belton Woods, near Grantham and Dunston Hall, near Ipswich.

QHotels, of which we are big fans here at Cloud 9, operates 21 four-star hotels across the UK, including the Midland in Manchester and Queens in Leeds, as well as a number of golf resorts such as the Forest Pines hotel and golf resort near Brigg, Lincolnshire. With the 6 additional hotels now within the portfolio, and plans for the DeVere name to be eradicated, its certainly going to be an interesting time in terms of branding, and just what will happen to all of the DeVere promotional items left over during the handover?

Someones store cupboard will certainly be a little full - or maybe the items will become collectables and we'll be seeing them on Ebay! Either way, interesting times!

Have a great week!

What's Floating Around? 22 April 2014

Adam & Julian from The Studio Venues
Welcome to another (short) week and we hope that every one had a fabulous Easter. We consider ourselves very lucky to be working in such a great industry and as a result, we get all sorts of fantastic invitations to experience the hospitality of great hotels and venues, both in the UK and Internationally.

So, last Thursday, we help an Open Day at Cloud 9 and invited lots of Hotel and Venue representatives to drop in at our Easter Eggstravaganza, as our way of saying thank you. It was also an opportunity to get an update on some of the venues and introduce our newer team members (as well as showing off our new offices!).

Each team member ran a different activity in a different section of our offices and some certainly entered into the spirit of Easter with lots of enthusiasm - including the great guys from The Studio Venues. We feel that Julian is really working the look!

Paula felt that the ears were not really her thing, and Carol sadly had to miss the day due to a last minute appointment but was there in spirit...and the rest of the team, well its easy to see that they were really up for all aspects of the Easter experience and kicked off with an #Selfie first thing in the morning.

Shannon, Rubina, Becky and Harriet, who is studying Event Management at Leeds Met and is back with us for her third year, all hopped up!

The first port of call for visitors was Carol's Cracking Icing Competition where each of our guests were invited to decorate a Ginger Bread Egg Biscuit and some were more successful than others, its fair to say!

Heather and Jade from the Yew Lodge
in Kegworth took the competition quite seriously!

Katey from Gleneagles with her own Ryder Cup!
Helen with an impressive PUMA Hotels Egg

Luis from Maritim with a Cracking Effort!

Julie from the Raithwaite Estate - Great Branding!

June from Coombe Abbey, if in doubt, sprinkles!
Kevan from Trident - Eggscellent Effort!

Brendan from Millenium Copthorn - Not Giving Up His Day Job!

Great effort from Nikki but Becky's attempt to recreate the Deansgate iconic Hilton, not really going to plan!

Craig's Cracking Effort for the Heart of England

Adam trying to curry favour with a Cloud 9 egg!

Julian also trying to cheat!

Fab effort from Alex at Q

After much debate here at Cloud 9 it was a tough call as to who to award the Easter Egg to for this particular challenge and it was really between Luis from Maritim, Alex from Q Hotels and Julie from the Raithwaite Estate. In the end though, we decided that Katey from Gleneagles was the deserving winner for her blatant plug of the Ryder Cup!

After all of that excitement, many of our guests visited Paula in the Pub (well our Pink Office which was kitted out with a little bubbly) and to have a chat without any bunny ears!

As most of our guests were driving, we did have lots of low alcohol stuff on offer and with a drink in hand, it was time to visit Shannon in our meeting room, which we call The Not So Bored Room. Here we had laid out a bit of a spread with Elvis looking on, and a competition, Shannon's Super Sleuth Egg guess.

There were some pretty wild guesses with the lovely Alison from Fairmont St Andrews, guessing 3458 and Becky from the Manchester Deansgate Hilton guessing 2152.

The actual total was 762 and the closest, with a guess of 760 was Adam from the Studio who wins the Egg! His colleague Julian only guessed 246 so what can we say....!

Harriet's Hot Cross Bun Challenge, was also pretty popular and the clear winner was Craig Cotterill of the Heart of England Confrence Centre, who managed to eat his in just 28.5 seconds. Craig narrowly beat Heather from Best Western who managed 29 seconds, and Kevan Holland from Trident who managed 30.2 seconds. Carla Garman from the Village Hotel was also pretty impressive with a score of 31.1 seconds.

Bringing up the rear however, with 1.22 was Nikki from the Deansgate Manchester Hilton, 1.05 was Adam from The Studio Venues, June from Coombe Abbey with 1.03 seconds and Alex from Q Hotels also with 1.03. Clearly, chaps have bigger mouths and an Easter Egg is on its way to Craig.

Finally once guests had collected their goody bags from Becky, who was guarding the cake tower with her life, it was time to say goodbye with a final stop off at Rubina's Raffle, where each guest was guaranteed to win a prize.

There were smiles all round for those who won bottle shaped prizes - we can't think why ?! - and even those that didn't win a bottle got some rather lovely chocolates.

So all in all another fab day at Cloud 9 Towers - and in addition to placing a rather large booking with a venue, we also got two nice new client RFP's, an update from some fantastic venues, had a giggle and were also lucky enough to receive some lovely gifts from our guests.

A huge thanks to everyone who came, those who had to cancel last minute and those that didn't manage to make it. We love working with you all! Have a great week!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 14 April 2014

Welcome to another week and its a Happy Easter from all of us here at Cloud 9 Towers!

It's busy as usual here at Cloud 9 Event Management and we are all looking forward to an extended weekend, and just in case you fancied getting away from it all over the Easter Holidays, there are some great hotel offers still up for grabs.

Our friends at Q Hotels have some amazing deals available including happy, occupied kids having fun. Chilled out parents taking a breather. Isn't that what every family needs once in a while? At the The Park Royal, Warrington, Cheshire  over Easter, May half term, Summer or October, you can stay from just £45.65 per person, per night. Don't forget kids aged 4 and under stay & eat for free. Whilst over at Chesford Grange, another great Q Property you can enjoy a memorable two-night family break including breakfast each morning, dinner on your first night & a family ticket to the fantastic nearby Warwick Castle. Plus stay this Easter & enjoy an activities room (table tennis, pool table, board games & arcade games) & a mini cinema offering a range of children's films.

If you fancy a pamper session rather than an Easter Egg hunt then Q are also offering some great deals. Let the pamper you with their famously award-winning friendly service, expert beauty therapists and revitalising spa facilities. Indulge in luxurious pampering at one of 18 award-winning hotels & receive a free bottle of pink fizz & 60 minutes of spa treatments. Sounds good to us!

The rather fabulous Carden Park is also offering up some great deals over Easter with
Spring holidays from £79.00 per night. Spring into Carden Park for a holiday over Easter and your stay will include a full English breakfast each morning plus use of the leisure facilities with swimming pool, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and gym.Four night holidays from £79.00 per room per night,Three night holidays from £85.00 per room per night,Two night holidays from £89.00 per per room per night and just a night is £99.00.

It’s not all mini-eggs and daffodils though as Principal Hayley Hotels are inviting you to put some style into your Easter and have three tempting city breaks: exceptional 5 star luxury in Cardiff, an elegant oasis slap bang in the bustling heart of Edinburgh and iconic style in vibrant Glasgow.

A stay at Cardiff’s leading 5 star hotel – the St David’s Hotel & Spa,  includes Afternoon Tea, Chocolate & Fizz on arrival. Located in an unrivalled position on Cardiff Bay, this luxury hotel offers 5 star bedroom accommodation as standard along with a world-class Marine Spa and Tempus at Tides Bar & Restaurant. The George in Edinburgh, perfectly placed for all things Edinburgh, is a luxury hotel offering stylish accommodation as standard along with a stunning Tempus Restaurant and their Easter Break includes dinner  along with an Eater Surprise. Finally, the iconic Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow might be more to your taste and an Easter Break there includes, in addition to dinner, a voucher for a glass of the fizzy stuff in Champagne Central. How fabulous!

There are of course lots of other great offers around and far too many to list but hopefully this might have inspired you to take a break over Easter.

We are a pretty lucky bunch here at Cloud 9 and we get all sorts of invitations to some pretty fantastic venues both in this country and further afield, so before the Easter holidays, we are having an open day for a few of those we've worked with closely over the
last few years just to say thank you.

We are slightly concerned though as we know some of the guests we have coming are rather on the tall side and our meeting room, whilst lovely, was never really designed for those who slept in grow bags as children!

Also, we have somewhat over invited so we are hoping that everyone is feeling cosy and friendly on the day as it might be rather busy....but irrespective its bound to be a lot of fun.

Whoever you are out there, the entire team here at Cloud 9 would like to wish you a very Happy Easter and we'll be back with all systems raring to go next Tuesday morning.

Enjoy.

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 28 October 2013

Welcome to another week and can you believe that we’re only eight weeks away from Christmas?!

Bearing that in mind,  if you fancy a London based treat this Christmas for your office party or client night out,  we’d suggest a Christmas Celebration at from Late Night London who are promoting the Jewel Bar in Piccadilly pretty heavily at present - and if you book by 31 October 2013 you’ll receive a complimentary Christmas cocktail for all of your party guests, and whilst you might be a bit distracted by Halloween this week, Christmas is only around the corner...

They've even come up with a little tribute based on the Twelve Days of Christmas, so here we go...with no apologies for the cheese...

On the 1st week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me….A  Party in Jewel Piccadilly On the 2nd week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me…. 2 Drinks Vouchers and a Party in Jewel Piccadilly On the 3rd week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me….3 Sweet Treats, 2 Drinks Vouchers and a Party in Jewel Piccadilly On the 4th week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me….4 Themed Packages, 3 Sweet Treats, 2 Drinks Vouchers and a Party in Jewel Piccadilly On the 5th week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me….5 GOLD RINGS, 4 Themed Packages, 3 Sweet Treats, 2 Drinks Vouchers and a Party in Jewel Piccadilly On the 6th week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me….6 Dj’s Playing, 5 GOLD RINGS, 4 Themed Packages, 3 Sweet Treats, 2 Drinks Vouchers and a Party in Jewel Piccadilly On the 7th week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me….7 Cocktails Brimming, 6 Dj’s Playing, 5 GOLD RINGS, 4 Themed Packages, 3 Sweet Treats, 2 Drinks Vouchers and a Party in Jewel Piccadilly On the 8th week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me….8 Glasses Clinking, 7 Cocktails Brimming, 6 Dj’s Playing, 5 GOLD RINGS, 4 Themed Packages, 3 Sweet Treats, 2 Drinks Vouchers and a Party in Jewel Piccadilly On the 9th Week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me….9 Hoola’s Dancing, 8 Glasses Clinking, 7 Cocktails Brimming, 6 Dj’s Playing, 5 GOLD RINGS, 4 Themed Packages, 3 Sweet Treats, 2 Drinks Vouchers and a Party in Jewel Piccadilly On the 10th week of Christmas Late Night London gave to me…. 10 Bar Staff Pouring, 9 Hoola’s Dancing, 8 Glasses Clinking, 7 Cocktails Brimming, 6 Dj’s Playing,  5 GOLD RINGS, 4 Themed Packages, 3 Sweet Treats, 2 Drinks Vouchers and a Party NOT just in Jewel Piccadilly

If you would like to find out more about Jewel or any of the options in London for a Christmas bash this year, then please give us a shout here at Cloud 9 - we have some truly great crackers this year!

Here at Cloud 9 Towers our Christmas Spirit and knowledge does extend to the rest of the UK and on a daily basis we are being inundated with some fantastic Christmas packages so we are certainly in know if you need some inspiration!

Q Hotels, which are always a favourite of ours, have some fantastic Christmas offers available this year and we are really loving the look of the festive breaks. As an example you could treat yourself to a two or three-night package at Stratford Manor. Your stay includes afternoon tea on arrival, dinner, bed and breakfast, a traditional Christmas Day feast and a spectacular Boxing Day Gala Dinner.

With great entertainment available throughout your stay, which includes a pianist, a local choir belting out some carols, magicians, race nights and evening discos, there is even a falconry display!

With 21 different properties, Q are bound to have something near you, so take the stress out of Christmas!

Alternatively, you could celebrate the festive season and enjoy the excitement and vibrant atmosphere of one of Mercure’s festive themed party nights! With numerous hotels throughout the UK and further afield, we are particularly liking the schedule from the Mercure Bristol Holland House Hotel and Spa.

We like an excuse to get dressed up here at Cloud 9 Towers so we love the sound of the Black White & Diamonds party nights. Set in a a stunningly themed suite, guests are invited to get all glammed up and indulge with an arrival drink and delicious three-course dinner before partying the night away.

For those that fancy it, you could instead put on that old School Uniform and enjoy a Back to School themed Christmas Party night.  Get to school early and enjoy assembly at the Bar then let the Headmaster call you class by class into the hall for your three-course dinner served by the school canteen team. You’ll have the chance to re-sit your exams to see which tutor group wins the end of term prizes!

Now if Christmas is not really your thing, then you might want to escape it, avoid the shopping, crowds and generally hide away. If this is the case then you can always indulge in one of the fabulous Spa Humbug packages available from a hotel we've had the pleasure of staying at recently.

The Clumber Park Hotel and Spa are offering full use of their spa facilities, with robes, towels and slippers, and then guests can choose from a selection of great treatments including a Three Kings’ Ritual (we dont know what that is but it sounds great!), a Gold, Frankincense & Myrhh hot oil massage (we dont know what this is either but anything to do with gold we like the sound of) and a Mulled Wine & Christmas Cake Grazing Board Lunch (we know what this is and we like!).

Additionally you can Detox Before you Retox, enjoy a Detoxifying Tropical Body Wrap, and a  Purifying Aromatherapy Massage whilst enjoying a Cleansing tea & Ytsara gift (we'll stick to the mulled wine we think!).

So there you are a few ideas for Christmas, which we hope will inspire a little!

In other news this week, we finally get the keys to the new Cloud 9 Towers this Friday but as everyone will know, the logistics of a move are never straightforward so it will be a few weeks before we are in, settled and sorted so in the meantime normal service continues.

Have a great week and Happy Halloween!
