What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 18th June

Welcome to another week!

We start with news about the CIPR Northern Conference for 2012 which was originally scheduled for Wednesday 4th July at the Northern Ballet Theatre in Leeds. The venue has remained the same, but the date has now been changed to Thursday 11th October.

The postponement was due to a number of factors and the impact of the post Jubilee celebrations, the current Euro 2012 tournament and the forthcoming Olympics were also taken into account.

The positive side to this is that we are now in a position to secure some additional great names to add to the line up so please look out for news and updates coming soon.

If you had already booked for the event and have not yet responded to the emails we sent out to delegates please do get in touch so we can amend your booking or issue a refund if you are unable to attend on the new date.

This Thursday would have been our Royal Ascot Ladies Day event,  which unfortunately we had to cancel. However, looking at the weather forecast for the week ahead, it was perhaps a wise decision after all. Sunny spells and a few scattered afternoon showers on Tuesday and Wednesday with light winds. Becoming more generally cloudy and breezy during Thursday, with rain developing later, heavy at times. We think the wet weather could have put a serious dampener on the day!

On to more positive news! Having run a huge variety of events for over 10 years we have collected an impressive amount of truly dazzling table decorations. From giant Martini Glasses that you can fill with marshmallows, to striking candle holders, our range is sure to add that extra special element to your events.

Buying decorations for an event can be an expensive business - and once you have used them, its unlikely that you will need them again. You don't want to throw them out so they will sit, boxed up and alone, taking up valuable storage space in your home, never to see the light of day again! With Dazzling Table Displays you can hire everything you need at incredibly cheap rates for as long as you want, and we even offer special weekend rates.

If creativity isn't your thing, but you still want to impress your guests, then we also have a decorating service which we can match to your colour scheme or your theme.

Weddings, parties, christenings, charity or gala balls, award ceremonies, graduations - you name it, we can deliver a truly spectacular setting on each table and dress the room to match.Ordering is simple, just take a look at what you would like to hire, decide how long you want to hire for, and use the link to book. www.dazzlingtabledisplays.com

Finally this week we welcome a new member to the team who is joining us over the Summer months, from Leeds Metropolitan University. Harriet is studying events and will no doubt be a valuable asset to Cloud 9 over our traditionally busy summer period - especially with Fresh!

Welcome Harriet and Cloud 9 wishes everyone a great week!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 6th June

Welcome to a short week!

As it's a short week, we'll keep this short and sweet....

First some bitter sweet news. It is with regret that we have had to cancel our forthcoming Ascot Ladies Day Comes to Nottingham event which was scheduled for the 21st June at Blotts. We don't know whether we priced it wrong, the Jubilee Weekend we have just all enjoyed, or the general economic climate had an impact, but ticket sales just failed to rally.

So, regretfully it was time to cancel to allow all of our great supporters, stall holders and the many contributors to the event, the opportunity to make alternative arrangements for the event.

Onwards and upwards and on to more positive news......

Plans for the CIPR Northern Conference are shaping up nicely and its a very packed programme this year, with three keynote speakers, three panels and three workshops.

The 2012 event will take place at the Northern Ballet Theatre, Quarry Hill, Leeds on Wednesday 4 July 2012 with a “Fit for the Future” theme.  The focus for this year will be centered around the changing face of the PR industry and how equipped we are to tackle the increasing challenges that lay ahead.

Whether it is understanding and keeping ahead of the continual changes in the digital and social media sectors, making the leap to being a sole practitioner or starting your own consultancy, or making sure you have the skills, gravitas and confidence to reach the top; the 2012 Northern Conference is one you cannot afford to miss.

Email paula@cloud9em.co.uk for a booking form, which also enables delegates to select their workshops and panels,  or book online via eventbrite http://ciprnc2012.eventbrite.com/

Lastly this week, if you missed the first of the series of great Fresh films, created by McCann Erickson to mark Fresh 2012, then take a look here. It really is a great showcase for the Making Mum Proud theme which surrounds the awards this year!

Have a great (short) week and we'll see you again Monday!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 28th May

Welcome to the week and may we wish all of our subjects a truly marvellous one!

There's an air of expectancy this week in the lead up to the BIG BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND next week. Whereas usually today we'd all be off, with the Queens Jubilee weekend looming, next weekend will be a long one, and hopefully one with better weather than we have experienced during the last couple of Bank Holiday breaks.

So in tribute to Queenie, we thought we would make this week's blog a truly regal affair!

Ironically, our only excursion this week is the monthly RSViP network social which takes place, and you couldn't have made it up, at the Crowne Plaza in Nottingham.

The Crowne Plaza was once The Royal Hotel and is just around the corner from Nottingham Theatre Royal and Royal Centre.

See, told you we were keeping it regal this week!

And now to another right royal event, which is only a couple of weeks away....

For the very first time in 2012 you can enjoy the atmosphere, dress up to the nines, browse the stalls and have a flutter at a very special ladies day luncheon, celebrating Royal Ascot, without having to leave our wonderful city.

Greeted with Champagne and Canapes on arrival, guests can show off their hats  whilst taking a gentle stroll in the garden or take a leisurely browse around one of the many stalls available on the day, selling everything from jewellery to jams.

After a sumptuous, three course, waitress served luncheon, which includes half a bottle of wine per person, guests can hear from a racing expert who will provide tips and advice on how to have a little flutter (or a big flutter!) from our tote table.

Over freshly brewed coffee and petit fours you can then study your race cards and place your bets before we screen the first race at 1.30pm.

Inside or outside, you will be able to see the Ascot Action during the afternoon from one of our screens, whilst continuing too browse the stalls, visiting the bar or having a bash at our charity raffle with some truly fabulous prizes up for grabs.

And if that wasn’t enough, outside will be both a hog roast and ice cream stall if you get a little peckish, and you can also enjoy afternoon tea, which will be served around 5pm.

Just after the last race at 5.30pm, the raffle will be drawn and there will also be a great prize for the most outrageous hat. Ending around 6pm, you are sure to have had a truly memorable day – which you will be able to relive with our next day photographic gallery - without the long and arduous journey home!

Tickets for this exceptional event are priced at just £60.00 + vat per person each and can be booked via email, paula@cloud9em.co.uk or online via Eventbrite www.eventbrite.com/event/2556510592

Group or Corporate Bookings for 10 places or more are available with a 10% discount. Places are strictly limited so book early to avoid disappointment!

Finally this week in a tribute to the Queen, we thought we should list our top 10 Diamond Jubilee favourites, facts and fun stuff to make you smile!

We are not having a party to celebrate the event this time round (Jubilee Weekend clashes with him indoors birthday celebrations!) but if we were, then we would really be going to town.

So here goes, the countdown begins........

At 10, we have the right royal lady herself, with a cardboard cut out Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, standing 170cm tall in a lilac dress. Perfect as a gimmick to stand around at your Diamond Jubilee street party or celebration!
Priced at £32.00 we think this is hilarious!

Over the reign, Her Majesty has given regular audiences to 12 Prime Ministers, so this is our number 9.

The first was Winston Churchill 1951-55, followed by Sir Anthony Eden 1955-57, Harold Macmillan 1957-63, Sir Alec Douglas-Home 1963-64, Harold Wilson 1964-70 and 1974-76, Edward Heath 1970-74, James Callaghan 1976-79, Margaret Thatcher 1979-90, John Major 1990-97, Tony Blair 1997-2007, Gordon Brown 2007-2010 and finally David Cameron 2010 - present.

At 8 we have something which we think would only suit the most patriotic of people . Yes, its a  Union Jack Second Skin Suit, priced at £26.00

With Medium, Large and Extra Large Sizes Available, we are guessing that one should not indulge in too many cucumber sandwiches or slices of battenberg before donning this look.

One things for sure though, you will certainly stand out!

At 7 we have that dilemma that many of us faced when having to buy a gift for someone!

Unusual live gifts given to The Queen on foreign tours include: two tortoises given to The Queen in the Seychelles in 1972; a seven-year-old bull elephant called "Jumbo" given to Her Majesty by the President of Cameroon in 1972 to mark The Queen's Silver Wedding, and two black beavers given to The Queen after a Royal visit to Canada.

At 6 we have something, which given our track record for terrible Bank Holiday weather is sure to be a must.

It's a Union Jack Umbrella Hat and according to the blurb, one size fits all. We do wonder how many glasses of the old vino collapso you would need to partake of to don such an item, but hey, it takes all sorts!

At 5 we thought we would let you know that The Queen has attended 35 Royal Variety performances. Whilst we have no doubt that she would be enchanted by Ashleigh and Pudsey, who won Britain's Got Talent recently and the right to perform at the next Royal Variety Show, we do wonder quite how she would react if Rapper Zipparah Tafari had won with his BGT audition song Where's My Keys Where's My Phone. We think that one would not be amused!

At 4 we have an item that every budding princess and drama queen should own - an inflatable crown! The advantages of having an inflatable crown as opposed to a real one, are of course obvious. You don't need your own tower to keep it in when not in use. You don't need to employ the services of Beefeater's to guard it. You don't need to learn how to carry all of that excess weight on your bonce as its just air. And most importantly of all, you can let the air out between appearances and stick it under your bed, along with the rest of your rubbish purchases!

At 3, The Queen has sat for 129 portraits during her reign. Wow, what a woman. It might be a genetic thing, but all of the members of the C9 Team, hate having their photographs taken. Carol is especially allergic to this activity, so imagine having to sit still for all of those hours only to have your own mush to look at in the end!

At 2 we have that The Queen learnt to drive in 1945 but she is the only person in Britain who can drive without a licence or a registration number on her car. And she doesn't have a passport. So, not having to have a passport or other form of identification, must make life easier when it comes to renewing her annual motor insurance! Despite the powers of Google, we couldn't find any record, but we did wonder what would ever happen if Liz had a bump! After all, in these days of American Style Ambulance Chasers "Where there's blame, there's a claim".

We conclude our countdown with possibly the daftest thing we found amongst the endless array of paraphernalia that is available to help you celebrate the Diamond Jubilee Weekend ahead. So here goes...at number 1.... its a Pack of 2 Great Britain Car Wing Mirror Covers.  The blurb to accompany this £2.45 purchase states that each pack contains 2 Great Britain Union Jack car wing mirror covers are made from good quality polyester. You draw the string to secure onto your wing mirrors and it's the perfect addition for sports events and celebrating the Queens Jubilee!

We are literally speechless......but, enjoy your week ahead, and the Diamond Jubilee Weekend!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 21st May

Welcome to another week at Cloud 9 and its sure to be a busy one!

We have five days worth of work to shove into three days as we are having two trips out and about this week with some of our great hotel partners.

On Thursday we are off to enjoy an exclusive preview of the new conference and banqueting facilities at the Hilton and Hampton by Hilton, St George's Park, in Burton on Trent.

A landmark in the history of English football, establishing a National Football Centre in England has long been a dream of The FA. Various sites and schemes have been considered over the years, and in 2001, a 330-acre freehold site in Burton-upon-Trent was acquired by The FA. The site was landscaped and pitches were installed. The FA is delighted to partner with the internationally respected Hilton Hotels & Resorts and Hampton by Hilton.

The two hotels will operate under one roof at St. George’s Park; a luxury Hilton hotel and a Hampton by Hilton hotel for value-wise guests, and we get to take a sneak preview this week at both properties and the facilities!

In fact, it's so much of an exclusive preview that we have even been asked to supply our shoe size so we can wear work boots on site!

Friday sees us going much further afield to enjoy the great hospitality of Q Hotels at the unveiling of the Carrick Suite at The Westerwood Hotel and Golf Resort in Glasgow.

The Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort is one Glasgow hotel not to be missed. The Westerwood Hotel is located in prime territory whether you are craving the city buzz or the simple pleasures in life. With the recent opening of the M80 motorway, allowing extremely easy access to the hotel, The Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort is now only fifteen minutes from both Glasgow city centre and Stirling giving you a world of options that other hotels in Glasgow could only dream of.

The Westerwood Hotel near Glasgow prides itself on a lot more than just its location. Our grounds are second to none, without even touching on our 18 hole championship golf course. But if you do want to treat yourself to a round or two, the challenge will be made even more spectacular by the surrounding Campsie Hills.

We are looking forward to afternoon tea with a wee dram, a drinks reception and a great black tie do with ceilidh dancing! We can't promise to be any good at the dancing but I am sure we will enjoy the event immensely!

We are certainly seeing some very generous people around at the mo and our Royal Ascot Ladies Day event on 21st June is certainly benefiting. As part of the proceedings we have a charity raffle in aid of Breast Cancer Care and our haul of prizes is starting to stack up!

We wont list them all just yet, but here is a selection of some of the great prizes you could win on the day!

Restaurant 1877 has donated not one, but two prizes of a meal for two from the pre-theatre menu and also, a Cookery Class experience for one person with two guests.

1877 is a family-run, Michelin rated, traditional English restaurant, located at the former Ben Bowers site on Canning Circus, in the heart of the city and is one of the finest restaurants in Nottingham. http://www.restaurant1877.com/index.cfm

Effortless Beauty has donated a 45 minute Lava Shell back, shoulder and scalp massage which is a treatment suitable for both ladies and gents.

The radiating heat from the polished smooth shells delivers a deeper pressured and highly relaxing treatment. Lava Shells retain their heat up to 10 times longer than hot stones. The Beeston based salon has a range of great treatments so please do take a look http://www.effortless-beauty.co.uk/index.php

Sutherland & Barnett Hair & Beauty have donated a Ladies Cut & Finish at their stylish Lace Market Salon.  http://www.sutherlandbarnett.co.uk/  Sutherland & Barnett was conceived by Kate and Andrew Sutherland and Craig Barnett who all agreed that, despite what we are led to believe, most cities and towns in England lack high quality independent salons that are not franchises, clones or multinationals. Nottingham is no different. In the last 4 years, they have won British Hairdressing Business Awards Business Newcomer, Hair Awards Talent Scout 2012, and the Heart 106 Lifestyle Awards Best Hair Salon.

A huge thank you to those who have donated prizes so far and we'll reveal more soon so watch this space!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 14th May

Welcome to another week!

The CIPR Northern Conference is starting to shape up nicely and we are delighted that the event, being held on 4th July at the Northern Ballet Theatre in Leeds, is being supported by Kantar Media.

Delegate numbers are really starting to pick up and this could have something to do with the fabulous competition we are running – where one lucky delegate from each of the three regions (Yorkshire & Lincolnshire, the North East and the North West) each have the opportunity to attend the event as a V.I.P.

Simply purchase a ticket before Friday 15th June  either using the eventbrite link (www.ciprnc2012.eventbrite.com) or by emailing paula@cloud9em.co.uk and a winner from each region will then be drawn.

The lucky winners will then be fully refunded for their ticket and enjoy:
  • A complimentary place at the event (if you have already paid to enter we will refund you)
  • A small bottle of Bucks Fizz on arrival
  • Full VIP treatment at the event including reserved seating
  • A VIP Delegate Badge
  • A Delegate Brochure signed by all of the speakers
  • A personalised slide during the welcome and a mention in the Delegate Brochure
The winners will be notified during week commencing 18th June 2012 and confirmations issued. Please email paula@cloud9em.co.uk for additional information or contact your regional committee chair.

It’s a pretty tightly packed schedule this year at the Conference with three keynote speakers and all delegates have the choice to attend a choice of two out of three different workshops and panels.

Book now, you really will not want to miss this!

Our Royal Ascot Ladies Day Comes to Nottingham is starting to gain momentum and we have been on a mission to secure lots of lovely stuff to add to the goody bags – each guest will get a complimentary bag brimming with great goodies!

Our great friends at Hearst Magazines are leading the way and the latest issues of Cosmopolitan will be winging their way down to Cloud 9 towers ready for stuffing – if you will excuse us!

We don’t want to give too much away too early but you are also in for some great little surprises!

And now a note to all of the gents!

Yes it’s a ladies day, but you are welcome and we have relaxed the dress code so you can ditch the extra expense of top hat and tails. Lounge suits will be fine guys!

We have had lots of calls about this so just to reassure you all, ladies you can still dress up to the nines, but chaps, relax!

A couple of weeks ago we visited the Conference and Hospitality Show in Leeds and in addition to meeting some great people and discovering some new venues that have not previously appeared on our radar (how remiss of us!), we also have a great find to report!

We’ve all seen those great photo booths that pop up at events where you can get dressed up, but this is something a little different and makes us slightly nostalgic here at Cloud 9.

Funflip are pioneers in the next generation of flip books.  They’ve taken a century-old concept and flipped it on its head to create the very latest in motion capture. Like all the best ideas, its brilliance lies in its simplicity.

We will be using them at the next event we can and suggest you might like to do them same – and if you are not convinced then take a look at http://www.funflip.co.uk/ and play the video!

We end this week with a little Am-Dram!

No, we are not taking to the stage but there is a local production we are supporting, The Noble Spaniard.

Written and first performed in 1908, it was not published until 1953 and it’s an amusing farce with clever and witty dialogue that has become a staple of many amateur theatre companies.

Marion Nairn, a young widow, is spending the summer together with her young sister Lucy at Boulogne with Justice Proudfoot and his wife. The Duke of Hermanos, who is also passing his Summer at Boulogne, one day catches sight of Marion, and from that time on, her is her devoted admirer. He stands outside the window and admires for a few days, but finally he enters the house and declared his passion. Marion, ostensibly to get rid of him, tells him that she is married, whereupon he declares that her husband must die, and goes forth in search of him.

When the maid tells him that Justice Proudfoot is the master of the house, he naturally mistakes that elderly gentleman for Marion's husband and challenges him to a duel, which of course brings Lady Proudfoot under her husband's suspicion. One after another, the men in the piece are mistaken by the impetuous foreigner for the husband of his adored one, and one after another, he tries to fight them all. In the end Marion succumbs to this passion - it seems the only way to kill it.

So there you have it – a little culture to see out the week!

Have a lovely week everyone…
