What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 27 October 2015

Welcome to another week and we’ve been so busy that we are a bit behind on our blogs – shocking! But never ones to miss out on news and events, we’re delighted to share some updates on the lovely new Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech which is now open for business! 'The world's best voted destination by TripAdvisor in 2015'

Some of the facilities & services include - 63 keys including 9 Suites and 54 Villas each with their own private pool, 1800sqm world-class spa with indoor pool, hammam, fitness facilities, yoga room. Unique and timeless interior design with a sense of place by celebrated French duo Gilles & Boissier.

Whilst we are on the subject of launches, the new Studio Venue is also open in Leeds.
Based in the heart of the city (just a short walk from the train station) is their 8th floor studio with stunning panoramic views of the beautiful north.

In typical studio style, you will find all of our usual quirkiness entwined within the 7 functional meeting & event spaces. We have everything from a living moss wall as you exit the lift, magnetic walls in the meeting rooms through to a Lego wall in the refreshment area… who said conferences have to be traditional?

As always, the spaces on offer are flood with natural daylight, have all of the mod-cons needed to run a conference and will be serviced by the excellent studio operations team with the true ethos of customer first at the heart of everything they do!!

You can check out the the interactive floor plans on their website, or take a peek at their YouTube clips of how to find the venue and images of all the new spaces. http://www.studiovenues.co.uk/plans/Leeds/index.html

They also have a rather funky time lapse video of thestudio… Leeds being built https://youtu.be/nEI9Vr4wFjw If only all new venues were this quick to build!
Finally this week, we’d like to wish everyone a Happy Halloween!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 14 September 2015

Welcome to another week and now that the Summer Holidays are well and truly behind us, we're in somewhat of an educational mode.

With this in mind, we thought this week, it a good idea to mention essential reading this week for event people. Don't worry, we are not into all of those huge Self Help books, but we do firmly think that inspiration can come from a variety of sources and we like to be well read!

We do get a lot of Industry Magazines here at Cloud 9 Towers and we do like a quick flick through them over our butties at lunchtime, just to make sure we are keeping up to date and we even featured some of our suggested essential reading on our latest YouTube post a couple of weeks ago - which if you haven't seen we suggest you watch!

However, we also like a good book here and we mentioned Judy Allen a couple of weeks ago and her brilliant book for event planners. Event Planning: The Ultimate Guide to Successful Meetings, Corporate Events, Fundraising, Galas, Conferences, Conventions, Incentives and Other Special Events is a bestselling all–in–one guide to the event planning business  and has been  fully updated and revised to reflect the very latest trends and best practices in the industry. This handy, comprehensive guide includes forms, checklists, and tips for managing events, as well as examples and case studies of both successful and unsuccessful events and some of content we are sure you will find particularly relevant!

Another great read by Judy is the Marketing Your Event Planning Business book, which is a must for any event planner looking to start up their own business – mostly because it contains every bit of advice to follow if you’re going to become a known brand. Established firms should also give it a read; it’ll be a godsend if you’re looking to expand your client base.

Given that corporate meetings are pretty much an integral part of the events industry,  there are plenty of books on how best to plan them. Thing is, most of those works focus primarily on logistics – something which most event planners are fairly capable of dealing with so Into the Heart of Meetings by Mike van de Vijver’s book instead delves into a number of core questions and practical issues involving meeting design; most importantly, it teaches how to tailor content so meetings deliver the best results possible.

'Rework' by Jason Fried and David Heinemeir Hansson is also on our list. With chapters like 'Meetings are Toxic,' 'Fire the Workaholics,' and 'Planning is Guessing.', it's a great, short read and certainly some of the content will stick with you.

We also like 'Boring Meetings Suck: Get More Out of Your Meetings, Or Get Out of More Meetings' by Jon Petz as its a very lighthearted and engaging book and is anything but boring!

So there you have it, a little reading about reading! Enjoy and see you soon!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 30 March 2015

Welcome to another week at Cloud 9 and as we've recently launched our own YouTube Channel, we thought we'd share a few tips we've learnt along the way!
“2015 is the year of the video”. You hear this sentence time and time again and it can be seen all over the internet. Everyone is talking about the rise of video and how video marketing is, without doubt, the future of content marketing. While everyone within the events and meetings industry admits to knowing that video is the way forward, we're still not using video to its full potential. (we have to admit we've still got a way to go but we're giving it a go!).

Below is a sneak peek of Meeting Booker's findings and how hotels can use video to drive more bookings...

Use video to increase social engagement
Recent Twitter research revealed that Tweets featuring a vine video get 256% more engagement than
tweets with no video. 256%. That’s a phenomenal difference. Sharing video on your Twitter or Instagram can help you get a huge following and will also encourage customers to share their own videos and tag you in them. Posts that include video on both Instagram and Twitter are a lot more likely to be seen and shared than posts which contain just text or images.

Use video to attract people to your website
Site visitors who view video on the hotel website’s homepage stay, on average, two minutes longer than visitors who just view text. Making video available can also make customers happier with the likelihood of a customer making an online booking or requesting a proposal said to increase by as much as 67% if a video tour is available.

Use video to increase conversion rates in emails
Did you know that including video in the body of an email can now increase conversion rates by up to 50% for hotel bookings? Video content in email marketing used to be considered something of a trend, but in recent years it has become more of a standard marketing technique.
The reason a lot of people opt not to include videos in their emails is that video can take up a large amount of memory and space, and many mail clients will not support large video files in the body of an email. To get around this problem, you can make a thumbnail image of the video and include that in the body of the email instead.

Use video to get a page 1 ranking on Google
There are four key ways in which video can help increase your sites’ SEO. First off, video will improve your sites SERP ranking. Pages with video are in fact 53 times more likely to rank on the first page of Google search results than pages without video. Secondly, having a video encourages more people to click, thus attracting more people to your site. Thirdly, visitors to your homepage will usually stay two minutes longer on your site on than sites without video and finally video is great for link building.

Use video to showcase your venue on YouTube
According to Google’s first ever YouTube White Paper, 89% of leisure travelers and 93% of business travelers watch online travel videos before going somewhere. A great way to advertise your hotel is to
pay for your video to be shown at the beginning of popular YouTube videos.
While most YouTube watchers are interested in community-generated content, the majority of travel-related views are for professionally released videos. In fact, views of branded videos are up 394% year on year, making YouTube an excellent platform to showcase your property and attract more bookings.

We hope this has been helpful and maybe given you the motivation to use the power of video, but if not then don't let that stop you looking at our efforts!

So, that's it for this week folks and don't forget it's just a month away until the CHS Awards, so book your tickets here

Have a great week folks!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 9 June 2014

Welcome to another week and we're pleased to report that last weeks Midlands Media Awards went extremely well, with 300 guests at Aston Villa, celebrating the success of journalists and broadcasters from throughout the region.

We had lots of nice comments following the event which is also a positive and judging by the photos from the night we think everyone looked pretty happy with the event (including Qasa Alom from BBC Radio in Stoke who seems pretty pleased!) so we think it was a job well done.

No time to rest on our laurels though as this week our attention is all on the CIPR Northern Conference which is taking place in Manchester this Thursday.

This year’s Northern Conference will provide insight and learning into the skills required to operate in a digital PR landscape. Industry leaders will demonstrate how PR, Content Marketing, SEO and Social Media all work together to create fully integrated and measurable earned media campaigns.
Delegates will learn from the best in our industry about optimising copy for SEO, how paid, earned, owned and shared channels work together, content strategies for social and PR, as well as digital reputation management and monitoring.
The Northern Conference is perfect for PRs at any stage in their career and is filled with insight, learning and no doubt a good debate! So whether you are in- house or agency, in the voluntary or charity sector, or thinking about a career in PR, this is the conference for you.
Stephen Waddington

The Speaker Line Up is pretty impressive with Earned Media Specialist from the BBC, James English, CIPR President Stephen Waddington, Drew Benvie, founder of Battenhall (Drew is the UK’s #1 most respected practitioner in New Media Age’s 2011).
Additionally we have the Global Social Media Manager for LateRooms, The Communications Director for the Met Office, Representatives from the Co-operative Group, Harkable and McCanns as well as Google and YouTube so it should be an incredibly interesting day.
You can follow some of the activity live on the day using #CIPRNC
In other news this week it would be churlish of us not to mention the World Cup as football fever will no doubt be gripping the nation in the coming weeks. However if you don't like football the next few weeks might be a bit tortuous so we thought we'd look at ways to avoid it altogether. We have blatantly pinched this article from one we found online, but it made us laugh so much, we ran out of time to think up our own ways of surviving the tournament!

1. Walk around blindfolded for four weeks. Not only will you not have to endure watching all those football matches, but you could say it was a social experiment.

2. Invest in cable TV. Then you can watch E4's live coverage of Big Brother all day, and ignore the football altogether. (Although if you really wanted to miss the World Cup, you should have applied to be in the Big Brother house in the first place).

3. Arrange a last-minute expedition trekking in the Himalayas. Lots of scenery but no TVs.

4. Use the four weeks to organise your wardrobe. Have a massive clearing out spree, then go on the mother of all shopping trips. Retail therapy is the only answer to football fatigue. You know it makes sense!

5. As many of the matches are shown in the mornings (because of the time difference), have a lie in and miss the whole thing.

6. Become a nun (it's only for four weeks), and spend the time in quiet contemplation at your local convent.

7. Rent out all your favourite films from your local video shop and turn your home into a cinema for the whole of June. You could even hold your own mini film festival, and invite all your friends who are also trying to avoid the World Cup.

8. Pretend you're Harry Potter, and live in a cupboard during the competition.

9. Become an eco-warrior, and go and occupy a threatened tree. Lots of fresh air, and no soccer highlights with Des Lynam.

10. Take up football and train really hard. Then you might get into the England squad and get injured, or into the Irish squad and fall out with your manager. Either way, you'll miss the World Cup altogether. It worked for Gary Neville and Roy Keane.

So that's it for this week. Don't forget the deadline for Brand You and for The Fresh Awards is fast approaching...

Enjoy!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 15th October

Welcome to another week!

Our current focus is all about an event we are staging - the forthcoming CIPR Northern Conference which takes place at The Rose Bowl, Portland Crescent, Leeds, on 31 October 2012 with a “Fit for the Future” theme.

The focus for this year will be centred around the changing face of the PR industry and how equipped we are to tackle the increasing challenges that lay ahead. Whether it is understanding and keeping ahead of the continual changes in the digital and social media sectors, making the leap to being a sole practitioner or starting your own consultancy, or making sure you have the skills, gravitas and confidence to reach the top; the 2012 Northern Conference is one you cannot afford to miss.

There will be a packed schedule this year and a choice of interactive workshops as well as several keynote speakers, all of whom are at the top of their game. Delegates will also be able to enjoy the great facilities available at The Rose Bowl, a stunning prestige building with great views of the City of Leeds.

Cloud 9 has a good relationship with the CIPR (we're members) and staying in the PR industry, the other leading industry body the PRCA (we're members of this one too). So we like to think we know a thing or two about PR, and having run PR Awards for many years, understand the fundamentals of a great PR campaign.

However, our theme for this week is bad PR and some of the horror stories surrounding PR stunts and campaigns that have gone badly wrong. We haven't included how using Social Media as part of your PR can also backfire, as that in itself is worth a dedicated blog on its own!

Just remember to avoid some of these key mistakes that some of the bigger brand names have made in the past-

As PR gaffes go, it certainly wasn't slick. BP chief executive Tony Hayward decided to go racing on his yacht at the weekend while his company struggles to contain the 60,000 barrels of oil pouring into the Gulf of Mexico daily. Furious US Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel blasted: "I think we can conclude Tony Hayward is not going to have a second career in PR."

In 2001 Blue were riding high as Britain's most successful boy band - and on the verge of breaking America. Until gormless Lee Ryan opened his trap during an interview in the aftermath of 9/11. "What about whales?" he shrieked. "They are ignoring animals that are more important. "Who gives a f*** about New York when elephants are being killed?" Blue never did crack the States. Funny, that.
The too good to be true free flights promo in the 1990s offered trips to the US for any customer spending more than £100 from Hoover. The company found itself overwhelmed and hundreds took Hoover to court. The firm had to fork out £48million.

The £4.3billion Terminal 5 will forever be remembered for its shambolic opening two years ago. A catalogue of errors saw 216 flights cancelled and 15,000 bags delayed. What made matters worse was the fact that BA seemed incapable of accepting any blame over the fiasco. Later chief executive Willie Walsh finally admitted it was not its "finest hour."

The longest court case in England saw the burger giant sue Marie Steel and David Morris for defamation. In 1997, after 30 months, a judge said McDonald's had, among other things, exploited children with advertising. The firm was still awarded £60,000 damages but did not pursue this money after the campaigners refused to pay.

In order to avoid making major PR gaffes, it is always worth taking the time to do your research, think before you speak and if funds allow, get involved with one of the professional trade associations like the CIPR or the PRCA.

Both offer extensive training and a range of courses and webinars covering a range of communications topics, including conferences to help shape and sharpen your communications skills - especially now that Social Media is so vital in any PR campaign.
 Social Media Conference 2012
The CIPR ‘Share This: Social Media Conference’ takes place at the Microsoft building, London, on 1 November 2012.Featuring sessions on mobile, building campaigns, social media newsrooms and understanding social analytics, you can attend those most relevant to you.Experts in various sectors will cover aspects of social media including the BBC's Director of Communications, Paul Mylrea FCIPR, who will be discussing how the BBC-managed Twitter during the recent Olympic Games; David Bailey from Staffordshire Police will present a case study on social media guidelines; Penny Fox & Elayne Phillips from Defra will be presenting a joint case study on integrating traditional and social media; and Metrica's Richard Bagnall will present the latest thinking on social media measurement. The keynote speaker will be Robin Pembrooke, Head of Online for ITV and Global Radio.Further discussions and case studies will be presented around Networks & Platforms, Mobile and Location, and Understanding Social Media Analytics and Measurement.

Once a member of the PRCA, many of their excellent courses are completely free including an upcoming event which is a Digital and New Media Campaigns Masterclass. Threepipe present their Ericsson Money campaign along with Azzurri Communications talking through their 2011 PRCA Award winning Connecting for Business Health campaign. Find out how Ogilvy PR London put content at the heart of their campaign surrounding Panda Awareness Week, clocking up more than 2 million views of their video content on YouTube and gaining coverage across the globe from the China Daily to Good Morning America and BBC World.

Yes you need to invest some time and often some money to ensure you deliver effective communications for your company, but at least if you do, you will ensure you never suffer from the same fate as Gerald Ratner :  Surely the most famous (and most costly) blunder of them all was back in 1991. Gerald Ratner wiped £500million from the value of his jewellery company after joking the chain "sold a pair of earrings for under a pound, which is cheaper than a prawn sandwich from Marks & Spencer, but probably wouldn't last as long". He added a decanter was "total crap". Ratner was forced out and the firm re-branded Signet.

Enjoy your week and don't forget to book for the CIPR Northern Conference on 31st October !
