What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 16 December 2013

Welcome to another week and our final blog for 2013.

It's been a very busy year in which we have delivered over a dozen different award ceremonies, a couple of conferences, several promotional events and delivered venue finding solutions for a range of client activity.

We've booked trains, planes and chauffeur driven cars as well as a variety of great speakers and awards hosts.

We've proofed scripts, certificates and books of winners like you wouldn't believe.

We've been on several training courses (mainly on social media), attended a variety of trade shows and enjoyed some rather lovely fam trips.

We've been all over the UK with events in Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Edinburgh, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle,Nottingham, Sheffield and even Thetford to name a few.

We've learnt all sorts of new stuff including how to use IFTT, DigiTickets, Poken and Venue Directory.

We said hello to a new team member and goodbye to another as she returns to University to complete her Event Management Degree after two seasons with us.

We've won a couple of competitions from some of our lovely venues and suppliers including overnight stays in hotels, photo shoots and a weekly cupcake delivery.

We've worked with some great sponsors, partners, suppliers, awards entrants and clients and hope to work with lots of new ones too in 2014.

We've lost count of the number of cups of tea we've made, trophies we've handed out and numerous other day to day activities that make up Cloud 9 Event Management Ltd.

But perhaps the biggest news this year has been our move to new offices, which we only just managed last week after months of planning and delays (please note our new contact details*) and to kick start 2014 we'll also have a lovely new website.

We break up this Friday for a much needed rest over the Christmas and New Year period but we'll be back on Monday 6 January 2014. In the meantime, we'd like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Enjoy!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 9 December 2013

Welcome to another week and we are delighted to announce we are finally in our new offices......so please take note of our new details including our new telephone number....

It took a little longer to get here than we had hoped and we are still surrounded by packing boxes, trying to decipher some of the new technology including telephone systems and smart tv's - but thankfully we can work our new kettle and we have never had a problem unwrapping the biscuits so anyone visiting between now and Christmas is sure of a warm if somewhat chaotic welcome!

Additionally being so close to Christmas, we're also stuffing all of our visitors with Mince Pies and as we don't have a Fortnum & Mason or branch of Harrods nearby, we've been busy stocking up thanks to our local Co-op.

Judging by the way they have been enjoyed, we think the Co-op variety is being well received although if we had a local Aldi or Lidl, we might have shopped there instead given the recent Which? reports.

The bargain-basement supermarkets Aldi and Lidl have felled the posh-nosh royal warrant holder Fortnum & Mason in a taste test of that most traditional of Christmas foods, the mince pie. The low-price competitors, whose stock has been rising since the credit crunch hit, delivered the latest blow to their upmarket rivals by coming first and joint second in an annual competition run by the consumer group Which?

Aldi's specially selected luxury mince pies – the cheapest tested at £1.69 for a pack of six – beat the likes of Selfridges and Fortnum's, whose £12.95 traditional mince pies came last out of entries put forward by a dozen retailers. Lidl's £1.79 Snowy Lodge luxury mince pies and Marks & Spencer's handcrafted ultimate all-butter mince pies, at £4 for four, came joint second.

Judges tasted each pie warm and rated appearance, aroma, texture and taste. Aldi's was "lush, spicy and juicy while the rich golden pastry is thin, crisp and light", but Fortnum's "flat-tasting, soft and crumbly" pastry got a thumbs down.

Aldi and Lidl have been attracting more affluent customers with luxury foods such as lobster tails and Serrano ham. Tony Baines, Aldi's UK managing director of buying, said: "Everybody likes to treat themselves at Christmas, and by doubling the size of our Christmas range we have ensured that our customers can do just that without either breaking the bank or compromising on quality."

Fortnums, based in Piccadilly, London, kept a predictably stiff upper lip. "Our traditional mince pies are a delicious product and we're very proud of them. Our customers agree and we are trading significantly higher than last year, " it said.

So, that's it for this week, we'll get back to our unpacking and join us next week for our final blog of 2013...enjoy!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 2 December 2013

Welcome to another week and we are kicking off our Christmas a little early with the first of our festive bashes tomorrow with the Birmingham Press Club.

It's being held at the Studio in Cannon Street, Birmingham. And favourite comedian and panto star Joe Pasquale will be the guest speaker. Oh! yes, he will!

One of the core reasons we're doing this is to ensure that we make some noise about the forthcoming Midlands Media Awards which are set launch in the New Year.

We are busy with the website and preparations for the 2014 Awards including the appointment of judges, starting to talk to sponsors and generally getting everything in order to make this the best Midlands Media Awards ever.

There is still a little time to make a difference to the awards with your suggestions on categories for next year, so please email Shannon if you think we are missing any - we can't promise to include them but welcome your views.

In other news this week our long awaited move looks like it's finally here with BT finally getting their act into gear with phones lines, broadband and a spangly sparkling new telephone system. Whilst we'll leave our big, formal announcement (address, phone number etc) until next week, the issue with phones has been a bit of a pain and it made us wonder just who else out there has had similar experiences, or indeed worse ones to make us feel slightly better.

We think the following is a completely made up load of baloney, unless the Ribrock Plaza has changed its name, but even so, the moral of the story is quite a good one and classically demonstrates that the bigger companies should always listen and more importantly, learn...

Leola Starling of Ribrock, Tenn., had a serious telephone problem. But unlike most people she did something about it. The brand-new $10 million Ribrock Plaza Motel opened nearby and had acquired almost the same telephone number as Leola.

From the moment the motel opened, Leola was besieged by calls not for her. Since she had the same phone number for years, she felt that she had a case to persuade the motel management to change its number. Naturally, the management refused claiming that it could not change its stationery.

The phone company was not helpful, either. A number was a number, and just because a customer was getting someone else's calls 24 hours a day didn't make it responsible. After her pleas fell on deaf ears, Leola decided to take matters into her own hands.

At 9 o'clock the phone rang. Someone from Memphis was calling the motel and asked for a room for the following Tuesday. Leoloa said, "No problem. How many nights?"

A few hours later Dallas checked in. A secretary wanted a suite with two bedrooms for a week. Emboldened, Leola said the Presidential Suite on the 10th floor was available for $600 a night. The secretary said that she would take it and asked if the hotel wanted a deposit. "No, that won't be necessary," Leola said. "We trust you."

The next day was a busy one for Leola. In the morning, she booked an electric appliance manufacturers' convention for Memorial Day weekend, a college prom and a reunion of the 82nd Airborne veterans from World War II.

She turned on her answering machine during lunchtime so that she could watch her favourite soap opera, but her biggest challenge came in the afternoon when a mother called to book the ballroom for her daughter's wedding in June.

Leola assured the woman that it would be no problem and asked if she would be providing the flowers or did she want the hotel to take care of it. The mother said that she would prefer the hotel to handle the floral arrangements. Then the question of valet parking came up. Once again Leola was helpful. "There's no charge for valet parking, but we always recommend that the client tips the drivers."

Within a few months, the Ribrock Plaza Motel was a disaster area. People kept showing up for weddings, bar mitzvahs, and Sweet Sixteen parties and were all told there were no such events.

Leola had her final revenge when she read in the local paper that the motel might go bankrupt. Her phone rang, and an executive from Marriott said, "We're prepared to offer you $200,000 for the motel." Leola replied. "We'll take it, but only if you change the telephone number."

Of course, on the flip side we feel fairly certain that a lot of call centres and customer care lines also have to put up with rude or daft people who call for a variety of reasons so we'll put our own personal phone logistics down to experience!

However, we couldn't resist listing some of the best ones here, and you have to feel very sorry indeed for the telephone operators...

A customer threatened to escalate his complaint, adamant that his phone should have withstood a full wash cycle. The label sewn to his jacket pocket clearly stated that the pocket was “fully waterproof”.

A utilities company received a call from a customer complaining about the exceptionally high quality of customer service. It was suggested that less money was spent on staff training and the savings put to reducing customer bills.

And finally, an internal help desk received a call from a user complaining that she could only view her monitor correctly if she lay her head on her desk. Once the monitor was rotated by the support team, the problem was solved.

That's it for this week, please check in next week for our big new Cloud 9 Event Management contact details....!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 25 November 2013

Welcome to another week and the big office move continues, although its moving a little slower than we would like, thanks mainly to the wonders of telecommunications!

We won't name and shame the supplier in question as we are still hoping that maintaining civil relations at this point may enable us to secure an earlier installation date, but we would advise that you watch this space in case we do get a little desperate!

On a more positive note, a new office for Cloud 9 has provided us with an opportunity for some much needed retail therapy and in the course of sourcing some swanky new chairs, to match our equally swanky new desks, we came across a little something that made us giggle.

Now, we can't possibly match the team to any of these in good conscience but we'd love to know your type (and we don't just mean the chairs!)

We are hoping, and seriously hoping that next week we can bring you news of the big move so until then...have a good one!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 18 November 2013

Welcome to another week and its all about EIBTM this week - where the global meetings and events industry connects - so we are off to Barcelona!

EIBTM is the leading global event for the meetings, incentives, conferences, events and business travel industry, taking place in the award winning business and tourism destination of Barcelona. The event gathers over 15,000 MICE industry professionals for three days of focused access to a dynamic business environment with over 3,100 exhibitors, thought provoking professional education and business networking to drive your business into the future.

The event runs from 19-21 November 2013 for another must attend exhibition and on the 18 November for the EIBTM Forum, is a  thought provoking conference, open to all EIBTM participants.

We lucky to be going as guests of Accor but its not a complete jolly as we have a very very early start and a packed schedule of meetings throughout the event. However, even the busiest schedule allows a moment to enjoy the view from the Pullman Barcelona Skipper hotel, which is where we are staying. Barceloneta Beach is temptingly close. Multiply that temptation by two - for the two swimming pools - then factor in the tasty tapas in the Blend Restaurant and you have all in all a rather lovely hotel!

We are well versed in attending events as Hosted Buyers but this will be our first time at EIBTM so we are perhaps a little more excited than usual -  and on asking around about tips to make the most out of the event, the overwhelming advice seems to be - wear flat shoes!

This reminded us about our trip to the Meetings Show back in the Summer when Paula did have a rather unfortunate shoe mishap and had to cancel a couple of pre-scheduled appointments to make a timely dash to Kensington High Street in search of a shoe shop!

We are also already making sure we are signed up for the other leading event shows next year so we can ensure a Cloud 9 presence at all of the leading industry events.

Some of the team are off the the BNC Global Event Show in February at the Brewery in London. The BNC Global Event Show is an exciting exhibition based in the heart of the City of London. The Show is designed to bring top event planners together with leading UK and international event suppliers in a refreshingly relaxed environment.

The also have leading experts from the events and meetings industry to present interesting seminars and discussions. Stay at the cutting edge with talks on a range of topics such as marketing, event creation, food and drink and much more. Past guests in include Michael Douglas from Genie Mobile on the possibilities for mobile technology, Kate Conway from Tesco on harnessing the power of digital, William Thomson from Gallus Events on organising experiences, and Sam Bompas from Bompas & Parr on the exciting uses for jelly for events!

One of our favourite shows returns next year and that is the Conference & Hospitality Show in Leeds in April which is the only exhibition outside of London for the meetings industry so make sure you register and keep checking their site for updates and news.

Of course one of the bigger shows within the Industry was always Confex which seemed to have lost some of its sparkle over the last few years, but with new owners in place, and a thankful return to Olympia (we do like Excel but its a pain to get to for us!) we are hoping for a better event.

International Confex is established as the UK’s leading exhibition and has been supporting the meetings and events industry for 30 years.

In this diverse and vibrant industry, International Confex's role is to provide the annual meeting place for the events world and to connect event professionals such as yourself with the best venues, destinations, finishing touches, technology and event support services the industry has to offer.  With the help of our fantastic exhibitors and event experts, International Confex is the place to be to do business and seek advice and inspirational ideas for your events and it's a great opportunity to get that all important face time that can be so difficult today.

International Confex takes place over two days in March in London’s Olympia and hosts over 900 exhibitors covering four areas - UK Venues & Destinations: Discover tourist attractions, unique or traditional venues, sporting venues, castles or country manors. The best thing about it is you only need to travel to one place, Olympia London.

International Venues & Destinations: Travel the world (no need to book a flight it's all in Olympia) and discover inspiring destinations, venues, resorts and incentive travel ideas and get amazing ideas for your next events outside of the UK.

Something Special: Something Special does exactly what it says on the tin and connects you with market leading suppliers who can provide those vital finishing touches for your events that will leave your guests and clients speechless with sudden urges to tweet about how fabulous you are.

Logistics: Whether you're seeking the latest audio visual, graphics, security, or lighting, our exhibitors can ensure that your events run smoothly and efficiently providing you with some jaw-dropping and cost effective  technology.

Over 7,000 visitors from leading agencies, associations and corporate organisations come through the doors to meet new and existing suppliers, attend high-level seminars, see new show features and most importantly, network with fellow event professionals.

So a bit of a Trade Show Special this week, enjoy or maybe in the spirit of EIBTM our sign off this week should be olé

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 11 November 2013

Welcome to another week at Cloud 9 and what a wonderful week it is.

We are now officially in moving mode and its all hands on deck as we say goodbye to our old office. We’re not moving far in fact we’re moving meters away however it’s the perfect space for our expanding team and business.

We’re ever so busy with the move however we didn’t want to neglect the blog so this week we’re going to talk about hotels but not just any hotels, unusual ones. You might be thinking ‘’what qualifies as an unusual hotel?’’ well from Treetop Hotels to a cabin in The Woods we’re never too far from something a little different.

Tree Sparrow House – Cornwall :This hotel or should we say Tree House is perched in an ash tree with sweeping sea and countryside views, the tree house accommodation offers a cozy and unique holiday adventure.

Spitbank Fort is an unusual and historic sea fortress in the Solent, off Portsmouth. Now a luxury exclusive venue and hotel, the fort was formerly home to hundreds of soldiers guarding the approaches to Portsmouth. The arms and ammunition have long been removed, making way for nine luxuriously furnished bedroom suites, three bars, three restaurant areas, and spa facilities.

Railholiday is a family company that has built a living providing self-catering accommodation in restored railway carriages. The family started with the restoration of The Old Luggage Van in 1995 and such was the demand that they added The Travelling Post Office to their St Germans station base.

They have since added The St Ives Bay SK2 carriage at their second location in Hayle, about 5 miles from St Ives on the west coast of Cornwall. Each carriage has a different character, and perhaps the most historic is the 48 ft long Travelling Post Office No. 841, built for the Great Western Railway.

It went into service in 1889, hauled by the City of Truro on its famous 100 mph run and was originally designed for broad gauge running. Converted to standard gauge in 1891 until its withdrawal in 1934, for many years the carriage formed part of a house in Wales. Now converted to sleep up to six in a combination of double room, sofa bed and bunk beds, The Travelling Post Office is a great place for families, friends and couples alike.

Beach Sun Retreat uniquely offers the ‘perfect beach and summer holiday’ with guaranteed sunbathing 365 days a year!

The retreat is one of the first in the country, alongside The Wholistic Medical Centre in Harley Street and Grange St Pauls 5* Hotel, to have installed ‘Real Sunlight’s’ innovative health-giving sun simulators, so you've got sunlight at the flick of a switch.
Occupying the ground floor of this former hotel, the property has been refurbished with two themed bedrooms to provide a stylish, one off and spacious holiday retreat, nestled in a quiet location at the end of a private road, with a large lawned garden and direct access to the sandy beach. It is a perfect venue for small parties, family holidays and romantic getaways.

In other news we would like to say a big thank you for the hospitality at the Meet Birmingham Showcase last week.
Now in its third year, the Meet Birmingham Showcase, in association with M&IT, was the chance to explore Birmingham, and meet face-to-face with the people who can make your events happen.

In the midst of some truly incredible changes, the city is seeing transformations unlike ever before. The brand new £188million Library of Birmingham not only offers a new city landmark, but also truly unique event spaces and this is just one of the venues we had the opportunity to explore last week as well as a great night at the New Hall Hotel and an overnight stay at the Radisson Blu.

It's fair to report that the team had a thoroughly enjoyable and educational time with the great Meet Birmingham Team, and a whole host of venues - including the new facilities at Conference Aston on Friday.

So that's it for this week..enjoy!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 4 November 2013

Welcome to another week and its a busy one ahead to say the least.....

With Halloween all done and dusted, it's Bonfire Night tomorrow so we are getting our woolly gloves out ready for our sparklers - which is about as much as we have time to organise this year with so much else going on here at Cloud 9...

We have trips to Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester in preparation for events for next year as well as two days at the Meet Birmingham Showcase at the back end of the week!

Now in its third year, the Meet Birmingham Showcase, in association with M&IT, is the chance to explore Birmingham, and meet face-to-face with the people who can make your events happen. In the midst of some truly incredible changes, the city is seeing transformations unlike ever before. The brand new £188million Library of Birmingham not only offers a new city landmark, but also truly unique event spaces.

The city’s infrastructure is also seeing great change, with the redevelopment of New Street Station and the runway expansion at Birmingham Airport. And with a steady stream of new hotels, there has never been a more exciting time to be bringing events to Birmingham. We have a few lined up and are yet to pick venues for 2014 so we plan to make the most of it!

With a series of venue tours and lectures over two days, it should be a great way to find out more about the options and even though we know Birmingham well, venues are continually changing so its great to keep up to date.

As soon as November hits we always start thinking Christmas (and why not?!) and one of the first events on our festive calendar is the Birmingham Press Club Christmas Lunch on Tuesday 3 December, with one of Britain’s favourite comedians – national treasure Joe Pasquale!

Press Club chairman Ed James said: “Joe is well-known for being one of today’s hardest-working and top-selling comedians and we are thrilled that he has been able to accept our invitation. The Christmas lunch is always one of the highlights of the Press Club year – and with Joe there this year will be no exception.”

Joe, who will made a Life Member of the Press Club in recognition of his professional achievements and support to the media industry, is this year appearing in the pantomime spectacular Sleeping Beauty at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, which runs from December 7 until January 18.

With a 20-year career of live stand-up tours behind him, and a television pedigree stretching back to 1987, when he first appeared on New Faces, Joe has amassed enough stories to write a best-seller. And that’s just what he is doing at the moment – writing his autobiography. If he can find the time to finish it, that is, for his schedule is pretty much non-stop at the moment.

As the “voice” of a number of TV and film characters, a star in touring theatrical productions, game show host, winner of I’m A Celebrity….Get Me Out of the Jungle, and a competitor in ITV’s Dancing on Ice, Joe is now – not surprisingly – developing into a real-life action man! For having qualified as a pilot and taken up boxing and running, he has also competed in a celebrity edition of Total Wipeout, attempted to smash the “most amount of martial arts throws in a minute on Guinness World Records Smashed and completed the Virgin London Marathon for Diabetes UK.

Also in Birmingham the same week is the Birmingham Publicity Association Christmas Party which we've not been too for a couple of years, but if our livers will allow, we might try and make it this year!

Its that time of year again where all BPA Members get together and have a good old party! This year their legendary Christmas bash will be themed 'Snow Business' and will take place at Villa Park on Friday 6th December, Boasting a whole lot of food, drink and some of the best entertainment you could imagine, the not-to-be-missed party will kick off at 12.30pm, with the after party going on until the early hours at Fleet Street Kitchen, Summer Row.

So a real Birmingham blast this week! Enjoy and have a good week!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 28 October 2013

Welcome to another week and can you believe that we’re only eight weeks away from Christmas?!

Bearing that in mind,  if you fancy a London based treat this Christmas for your office party or client night out,  we’d suggest a Christmas Celebration at from Late Night London who are promoting the Jewel Bar in Piccadilly pretty heavily at present - and if you book by 31 October 2013 you’ll receive a complimentary Christmas cocktail for all of your party guests, and whilst you might be a bit distracted by Halloween this week, Christmas is only around the corner...

They've even come up with a little tribute based on the Twelve Days of Christmas, so here we go...with no apologies for the cheese...

If you would like to find out more about Jewel or any of the options in London for a Christmas bash this year, then please give us a shout here at Cloud 9 - we have some truly great crackers this year!

Here at Cloud 9 Towers our Christmas Spirit and knowledge does extend to the rest of the UK and on a daily basis we are being inundated with some fantastic Christmas packages so we are certainly in know if you need some inspiration!

Q Hotels, which are always a favourite of ours, have some fantastic Christmas offers available this year and we are really loving the look of the festive breaks. As an example you could treat yourself to a two or three-night package at Stratford Manor. Your stay includes afternoon tea on arrival, dinner, bed and breakfast, a traditional Christmas Day feast and a spectacular Boxing Day Gala Dinner.

With great entertainment available throughout your stay, which includes a pianist, a local choir belting out some carols, magicians, race nights and evening discos, there is even a falconry display!

With 21 different properties, Q are bound to have something near you, so take the stress out of Christmas!

Alternatively, you could celebrate the festive season and enjoy the excitement and vibrant atmosphere of one of Mercure’s festive themed party nights! With numerous hotels throughout the UK and further afield, we are particularly liking the schedule from the Mercure Bristol Holland House Hotel and Spa.

We like an excuse to get dressed up here at Cloud 9 Towers so we love the sound of the Black White & Diamonds party nights. Set in a a stunningly themed suite, guests are invited to get all glammed up and indulge with an arrival drink and delicious three-course dinner before partying the night away.

For those that fancy it, you could instead put on that old School Uniform and enjoy a Back to School themed Christmas Party night.  Get to school early and enjoy assembly at the Bar then let the Headmaster call you class by class into the hall for your three-course dinner served by the school canteen team. You’ll have the chance to re-sit your exams to see which tutor group wins the end of term prizes!

Now if Christmas is not really your thing, then you might want to escape it, avoid the shopping, crowds and generally hide away. If this is the case then you can always indulge in one of the fabulous Spa Humbug packages available from a hotel we've had the pleasure of staying at recently.

The Clumber Park Hotel and Spa are offering full use of their spa facilities, with robes, towels and slippers, and then guests can choose from a selection of great treatments including a Three Kings’ Ritual (we dont know what that is but it sounds great!), a Gold, Frankincense & Myrhh hot oil massage (we dont know what this is either but anything to do with gold we like the sound of) and a Mulled Wine & Christmas Cake Grazing Board Lunch (we know what this is and we like!).

Additionally you can Detox Before you Retox, enjoy a Detoxifying Tropical Body Wrap, and a  Purifying Aromatherapy Massage whilst enjoying a Cleansing tea & Ytsara gift (we'll stick to the mulled wine we think!).

So there you are a few ideas for Christmas, which we hope will inspire a little!

In other news this week, we finally get the keys to the new Cloud 9 Towers this Friday but as everyone will know, the logistics of a move are never straightforward so it will be a few weeks before we are in, settled and sorted so in the meantime normal service continues.

Have a great week and Happy Halloween!
