What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 28th August

Welcome to a lovely short week!

It might only be August (just), but before you know it, September will have been and gone, Halloween and Bonfire Night a distant memory, and then its Christmas.

Whilst we are of the opinion that Christmas should really start and end in December, in events you have to forward plan and since Easter, we have been inundated with news from venues about their Christmas schedules and programmes for 2012.

So, seeing as its a short, silly week, lets all don our winter woollies (given the weather not as daft a suggestion as it sounds), grab some hot chocolate, sit on Santa's lap and take a look at some of the great offerings around for you to consider for Christmas 2012.

Book early, and through Cloud 9, you might just be glad you did.....

If you are looking for a spectacular venue with an edge then you might want to try the Ministry of Sound - one of the few centric spaces which can guarantee an exciting event experience, with an award winning lighting and sound rig coming as standard. The venue can accommodate parties for 100 to 1500 guests, and can support a range of catering options from light canapés to a seated banquet, with menus from just £10.00pp. So, if you want something a bit different then the Ministry of Sound can organise everything from an Amusement Arcade to a Roller Disco, so dig out your leg warmers and party! London based but worth the trip.

If you are looking for something a bit closer to home (for our Nottingham clients) then you could try a Marco Pierre White Christmas at the Alea Casino in Nottingham.  In addition to a unique dining experience, there are also party nights throughout December with prices from just £28.00pp.  Whether its Legends of Vegas, Dirty Dancing, Take That, Abba, Grease or George Michael that floats your boat, then there is something for you in the run up to Christmas.  Reasonably priced buffets and set menus are available, and for those who want to push the boat out, then you might want to try the Marco Pierre White New Year’s Eve Dinner & Ball. Additionally Alea are offering some exceptional "experience" packages from just £10 which includes a drink, 30 minutes of tuition on Blackjack or Roulette and £2 free bet. You could win back the cost of your night!

You could also take advantage and book early at one of our favourite venues in the region, The Nottingham Belfry. There are numerous choices on offer including Classic Christmas Party Nights,  Disco Inferno Nights for those who love 70's and 80's music, and even Warm Up Nights in the run up to Christmas. With prices from just £20.00 per person and lots of fabulous accommodation deals, the Nottingham Belfry is a great option for the festive season. The Belfry also offers a great New Year Getaway with prices from just £139.00 and is also offering some fabulous deals for those visiting friends and family in the area from just £65.00 per room including breakfast.

If you fancy a more traditional celebration this Christmas then you might want to consider stepping back in time and enjoying The Heart of England's very own take on Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol.Enjoy freshly roasted chestnuts and the sounds of the Carollers as you prepare to enter the cobbled streets of Victorian England.Enjoy a sumptuous Three Course meal, before partying the night away with their DJ. They will entertain you until the early hours with a wide variety of music. The spectacular nightclub sound, laser and video show will rock you like no other! Prices for Tuesday to Thursday are just £29.95pp and for Friday & Saturday evenings throughout December £36.95pp and include an amazing themed room, arrival drink, sumptuous traditional three course meal, fun casino with prize for the best gambler, and a Disco until 1am.

For the more budget conscious amongst you, you might want to consider our sister service through Dazzling Table Displays. Christmas should be a magical time but if you get stuck with organising the office Christmas Party and decorations again, the spirit of Christmas can soon desert you! Dazzling Table Displays can work their magic on your behalf from as little as £99+vat for our Christmas Office Makeover & Party Pack. We can even cater an office party and organise a range of games and festive entertainment, designed to suit even the tiniest of budgets.

Normal service resumes at Cloud 9 next week so do join us for news on Fresh, the CIPR Northern Conference and lots of other exciting projects we are about to unveil.

Programme for the Day

8.45am-9.30am: Arrival, Registration & Coffee

Jane Wilson

9.30am : Opening Address, Deborah Copeland CIPR YL Chair, followed by Jane Wilson CIPR CEO.

9.45am : Keynote: Gavin Forth, Global Marketing Director at ghd

An energetic senior marketer, with a strong ability to deliver, combined with a creative and innovative approach to business development and commercial delivery. Gavin will provide an insight into the role of PR within global marketing plans and the importance of PR for building a global beauty brand.

10.30am: Panels : Delegates can select two mid morning panel sessions, please see below for details and an outline of the content on each panel.

Panel A Journalism: With Len Tingle, BBC Yorkshire, David Parkin, Business Desk & Alison Epstein, Freelance Journalist. Session Chair: Jeni Beattie.

The Journalism Panel will discuss the future of print media, examine the latest challenges facing local broadcast news, and the chilling effect of Leveson. Three of the North’s senior journalists from the world of print and broadcasting will talk about how they have adapted to be “fit for the future”, how they see mainstream and digital media integrating, and what effect they think Leveson might have on press regulation.
As the role of media relations is evolving rapidly, this Panel should give PR people some understanding of how to balance the needs of a multi-platform media and survive corporate pressure from “above” from those who want to control the message.
Rob Brown

Panel B Social Media: With Rob Brown, Managing Director, Staniforth, Ross Wigham, Communications manager, Northumberland County Council, Alex Abbotts, Head of Communications at Bromford Group, Dom Birch, Head of PR and Social Media, Asda.
Session Chair: Helen Standing.

The Social Media Panel will feature four leading thinkers on how social media and digital communications is evolving and changing the role of PR practitioners. The panellists will bring their different perspectives on the role of social media in corporate communications. They will share their expertise on how we can be ‘fit for the future’ and claim the social media space as communications, engagement and relationship specialists. The discussion will look at the opportunities and risks presented by new technologies and media and how they can be integrated into the communications mix. Drawing on their own experiences, they will advise on how to demonstrate the importance and impact of social media communications and predict what platforms, tools and techniques we will be using in the future.

Panel C Video Broadcasting: With Rob Pittam, Robin Hood Media, Jonathan Grice, Fruition Media & Daniel Kennedy, Video News Agency. Session Chair: Stuart Bruce.

The Video Broadcasting Panel will look at how today video is an increasingly important tool for public relations professionals. Traditional broadcasting has changed fundamentally with 24 hour rolling news, budget pressures on regional news and the rise of global news channels like Al-Jazeera. Online more than 24 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. Social video streaming tools enable anyone to broadcast live video and interact live with a potentially global audience. The panel will share its expertise and own experience to provide practical tips and advice on how you should be integrating video into your communications strategy. It will look at how video isn’t just for sexy consumer brands, but is just as important for B2B and corporate public relations.

11.15am: Coffee & Refreshment Break

11.35am: Delegates can then select a second Panel Session to attend.
Panel A Journalism

Panel B Social Media

2.15pm: Kantar Media Session Track to the Future: Working together to master media’s momentum

Over the past decade, the client-agency relationship has evolved from a one-lane relay, with clear control procedures to finish the race, to a wider track, where we merge our expertise to complete the race together. In this session, Media Monitoring Director, Brian Merron and Deputy Manager of Media Evaluation, Matt Couchman discuss how much more PR and communications specialists can deliver beyond just numbers to set the track to the future.

The Presenters –

Matthew Couchman
Custom Evaluation Manager (Projects), Kantar Media Intelligence UK
Following his graduation in 1999 from the University of Brighton, Matthew joined TNS Sport (now Kantar Media), working on sport sponsorship analysis for clients including Barclays, Zurich and Vodafone. On joining the Media Evaluation department of TNS Media Intelligence (now Kantar Media) in 2005 his talent for managing large ad-hoc projects was apparent from an early stage which resulted in his promotion to his current position in 2008. Matthew’s clients include the DOH, Diageo, Coca-Cola and Unilever. Matthew’s talents were recognised by the industry when he was awarded Young Media Professional of the Year by AMEC in 2009.

Brian Merron
Media Monitoring Director, Kantar Media Intelligence UK
Brian comes from a background in the entertainment media sector, for a number of years specialising in the record and film industries in the UK and US. 2.45pm : Workshops

Delegates can select two afternoon workshops, please see below for details of each workshop.

Workshop A: Leaders of the Future with Professor Anne Gregory PHD, Director, Centre for Public Relations Studies, Leeds Business School, Leeds Metropolitan University.

Workshop B: Digital Futures with Paul Mallett, Digital Strategic Director and Board Director, Brass

I like my content augmented, wearable, percolated, hacked, embedded, scraped, collegiate and semantic....how about you? There’s a lot of hyperbole around the digital comms industry. What are the trends that are really shaping our lives and how can we apply new (and old) principles to the way we approach planning and delivery?

Workshop C: Create a virtual Creative Director with Andy Green.

Public Relations is going through a revolution - and you need to change to survive and succeed. But before you can change what you do, you need to change how you think. In this practical and fun session you will learn how to tell the difference from a critical from a systemic problem and discover different thinking tools to help you in your job. The session will show how the new CIPR Innovation & Creativity Toolkit will be the equivalent of a virtual Creativity Director for you and your team.

3.30pm Coffee & Refreshment Break

3.50pm Workshop A
Workshop B
Workshop C

4.30pm Keynote: Max Clifford

Max Clifford has been in the publicity business for well over 40 years. He has become as instantly recognisable as many of the stars he has represented over the years. His views and comments are sought on a daily basis for the world’s media on a wide range of subjects and he regularly appears on TV and radio as a guest on current affairs, news, documentaries and chat shows.

During the last 20 years he has become increasingly involved with many of the major front page stories in the British media. He now regularly breaks stories and stops stories in between orchestrating PR campaigns for a multitude of clients from all over the world and is also patron of two children’s charities and helps fundraise and supports many others. Often poacher and gamekeeper at the same time, he has helped save many a famous career from media damage and destruction. Increasingly during the last decade, he is approached by members of the public who seek out his help to get justice and awareness often when all other means have failed.

In 1970 Max Clifford created MCA his public relations company that he says has never to this day had to pitch for business. Max says: “The public relations side of my business is basically to set out and to create the best possible image for the many and diverse clients MCA represents. It’s interesting, stimulating, challenging and ever changing, and it’s infinitely preferable to having to work for a living”.

5.15pm Closing Address, Deborah Copeland, CIPR YL Chair

5.30pm Drinks Reception

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 13th August

Claire’s Cloud 9 Blog!

Hello there! My name is Claire and I have recently started working for Cloud 9! I graduated from Durham University with Geography (BA, Hons) degree in June this year. I have always been interested in event planning – I had a little dabble when I planned a series of fund raising events for my World Challenge to Iceland! I feel very privileged to be working for Paula; it is shaping out to be a really enjoyable and valuable insight into the fast paced life of events management! Within my few first weeks I have learnt and experienced so many diverse things and can’t wait to see what the next few weeks have instore!

Why not keep reading and see what exciting activities I have been up to since joining the team at Cloud 9?!

Firstly, as the Fresh Awards are slowly creeping up on the team, I have been processing submitted work. Remember to keep updated by checking out www.freshawards.co.uk! I was really impressed by some of the fab work that has been submitted! There are some really creative people out there! Keep up the good work folks! Paula then introduced me to the wonderful world of tweeting! Yes, I admit, it seems rather odd that a young person of this technological age doesn’t know how to use twitter… Nevertheless, I have really enjoyed being imaginative and creating lots of exciting tweets!

When I haven’t been tweeting, I was invited to sit in on a meeting with a very charismatic sales rep from the Fairmount Hotel, St Andrews. I have always associated this region with family holidays, competitive rounds of golf and my Mum’s soggy sandwiches. However, my attention has recently been turned to the fabulous Fairmount Hotel. The luxurious décor coupled with the stunning views of medieval St Andrews and the North Sea has made the area a definite place to visit in the near future! Will need to start saving however…

A little nearer to home, the team and I ventured to Eastwood Hall. The event was set up by Principal-Haley to showcase the venue to potential clients. The evening consisted of a drinks reception (sadly no champers this time as I was driving!), a tour of the venue and then a yummy BBQ! We were also invited to take part in a few wine and food tasting games! The evening was Olympic themed and there were Cadburys chocolate gold medals dotted around – very tasty indeed! The weather held which was the icing on the cake of a really enjoyable evening!

Continuing with the theme of visiting exciting new places, I have been invited to the Cotswolds to help out with the Fresh Awards judging! I am really looking forward to the week as I have never been to the Cotswolds! I hear Cotswold’s fudge is something of a regional speciality so I shall be hunting some down when I’m not tweeting or taking some snaps of the judges in action for the Book of Winners!

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 6th August

Welcome to another week, and we are delighted to introduce Harriet, our guest blogger for the week!

A big hello to all fellow bloggers! I’m Harriet and I’ll be this week’s blogger as the new event assistant of Cloud 9 and I’m honored to be a part of the wonderful team here! I’ve recently finished my first year studying for an Events Management degree at Leeds Metropolitan University – thankfully with flying colours! Paula has kindly taken me on into the world of events here as a placement student where I’m giving a helping hand with all the up and coming exciting arrangements! So far I’ve had to opportunity to be involved with manic lead up to The Fresh Awards 2012, the organisation of the judging period in the Cotswolds, The CIPR Northern Conference and our Dazzling Table Displays hire service, phew!

So without further ado let’s find out what’s going on around Cloud 9 Towers.

I’ve been given a brilliant opportunity to explore the wonders of the beautiful Cotswolds for The Fresh Awards judging period next week. I’m over the moon about this experience as I’ve never had the chance to go to the Cotswolds previously and can’t wait to see what it has to offer! Did you know Sheep were once the source of wealth in the Cotswolds? Let’s hope we see some!

Brides are clutching some alternative bouquets these days, and we love the romantic feel they seem to have. Gone are the days when a bride was required to carry a perfectly round bouquet - we think the imperfect ones look fabulous! In fact how about a bunch of peacock feathers?! Take a look and see what you think! http://www.dazzlingtabledisplays.com/

Colour POP! We have noticed the vibrant hits of color literally popping up at every turn in weddings these days. There are so many different ways to incorporate this trend into your big day. Give us a shout here at Cloud 9 Towers for some dazzling table displays and we’re sure to find you something to brighten up your venue!

Think pink! It's the wedding decor colour of the year… Rumor has it; Pink will be making a comeback (not the artist!). You’ll see pale pinks in combination with neutrals such as champagnes and creams. How quaint! For your perfectly pink day, have a look around http://www.dazzlingtabledisplays.com/

Whether it is keeping ahead of the continual changes in the digital and social media sectors, making the leap to being a sole practitioner or starting your own consultancy, or making sure you are mentally fit to face the future of this increasingly diverse industry, then the 2012 Northern Conference is one you cannot afford to miss. Visit http://ciprnc2012-es2.eventbrite.com/?rank=1 to book your place now!

We’ve got some star speakers this year for the CIPR Northern Conference including Max Clifford, Emma Leech from the University of Nottingham and Dominic Burch from Asda. We’re going panal-tastic! In the morning delegates can enjoy two of three different panel sessions; Video Broadcasting, Journalism and Social Media. The panels will cover a range of practical advice and insights from real experts in their field. http://ciprnc2012-es2.eventbrite.com/?rank=1 follow the link to book your place - See you there!

Have a great week!
