What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 29 September 2014

Welcome to another week and we can't think of a better time to announce a new service here at Cloud 9 which is golf related...especially seeing as the Ryder Cup success of Europe over the weekend has really highlighted the sport.

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, or kidnapped by aliens then you probably already know the details as the coverage over the weekend has been extensive.

Held at one of our favourite destinations, Gleneagles, it was a case of Gimme In The Glen: Keegan Bradley conceding Jamie Donaldson's putt halfway down the 15th fairway to confirm the point that Europe needed, with almost half the matches still out on the course and almost half the course trying to get to that match.

The climax was not short of romance, though. To a list of unheralded names to have sealed the critical point in a Ryder Cup - Philip Walton, Jose Maria Canizares, Paul McGinley - we can now add Donaldson; 39 next month, on his competition debut, a player who had to wait until his 37th year for his first European Tour win.

So with the golf buzz all around, we'd like to introduce you to Fore!

Working alongside our friends at Hawthorn Golf we are now able to offer a range of packages for the corporate market including some very special and exclusive deals both in the UK and Internationally.

Hawthorn Golf Limited has many years’ experience in successfully organising and hosting both corporate and society golf events. All designed to meet their customer’s expectations and budget, and we are working quite closely with them on this!

We will work in partnership with you to provide a bespoke package for your event, tailored from start to finish to your requirements, combined with additional enhancements / features and the excellent customer service which set us apart from the competition.

Whether you’re looking for a Ladies Afternoon Tee, Meet-4-Golf, Ryder Cup Event or just a corporate Golf outing with your colleagues, then we have just the service for you!

Please email us for details or take a look at the website for additional information.

In other news this week, whilst we are always looking for new team building activities, we came across something we'd not heard of before, which we like the look of.

wine-and-grapesPaint-A-Holics is an arts and entertainment company which came to fruition through a desire to share our skills, creativity, and positivity with others through painting. If you need help stepping out of your comfort zone and want to learn how you make a beautiful painting, then look no further. They offer group classes, private parties, children’s parties, private instruction, and commissioned works.

Unfortunately this is only available in the US at present, but we are fairly sure someone in the UK will be offering this service before long!

Each guest gets Step-by-step art instruction from a professional artist  (Private painting classes are approximately 3 hours long), Painting materials include a 16” x 20” canvas, easels, aprons, brushes and paint. Sounds messy, but fun!

Finally this week, we'd like to thank our friends at Corinthia Hotels for a stunning weekend in Lisbon. With nine fantastic locations, we've now managed to see three including London and Budapest, so only another six to go!

Have a great week.....

What's Floating Around Cloud 9? 22 September 2014

Welcome to another week and whilst Paula has been enjoying the delights of Amsterdam with the fabulous people at Accor this last weekend, the nightmare that is Heathrow continues to daunt even the most seasoned traveller.

Hence our delight at being given the opportunity to work with Cello www.flycello.com the private aviation company that operates from Birmingham.

The Cello service is simple, they exist to provide all of our highly valued clients with the best available VIP corporate jet transport, whether that be in the air or in terms of pre and post flight customer care. Based at Birmingham International Airport, and with the ability to position anywhere in Europe for your charter needs, Cello is superbly placed to deliver excellence at all times.

They own and operate the Avro Business Jet (known as the ABJ). It is a highly impressive, quiet, modern aircraft which can operate almost anywhere - even in the most environmentally sensitive airports and those with short runways and demanding approaches such as London's City Airport.

Cello carry many different types of client, such as:

  • Blue Chip Companies
  • Football Teams
  • Motor Racing Teams
  • Horse Racing Clients
  • High Profile Personalities
  • Entertainment Performers
  • Wedding Parties
  • Conference & Incentive Groups

There has been extensive press coverage recently about the use of private jets and these trips now are not just restricted to the rich or famous, as many individuals can benefit from a streamlined check in, a warm welcome, no queues and finally on boarding, a real sense of luxury.

Cello in particular offers a sumptuous environment for travel and utilising their expertise combined with some luxury hotels, we are hoping very soon to be offering some rather unique and bespoke packages that will enable corporate travellers to enjoy weekends and short breaks away, without the hassle of large airports that leave you feeling like you need a holiday to recover on your return! Watch this space.

In other news this week, we'll be at the MADE Festival www.madefestival.com in Sheffield exhibiting and promoting our revamped FUSE service to the great and the good.

Anyone who regularly exhibits or attends exhibitions know that it can be tough to ensure

your stand attracts attention and get the right sort of engagement with visitors.

We think we have it cracked with most of the team wearing appropriate attire - which if

anything should make us stand out!

We'll also be a rather sweet stand to come and visit as we will be running a small candy buffet during the festival - so make sure you float on over to see us on stand 51 and you might be in for a treat!

Brand You last week for Bristol Media was a great success and if you missed any of the results please make sure you check out the list here.

Finally last week, Shannon and Paula enjoyed the fabulous hospitality of Meet in Ireland  who held a networking event at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester followed by a fabulous evening at The Monastery in Gorton.

After a lovely Irish themed menu all of the guests were treated to some wonderful entertainment by accapella group, The Keynotes...

who performed some great numbers and thoroughly enthralled the audience. They certainly get the Cloud 9 seal of approval!

Organised by our friends at CHS Group this was a five star all round experience and both enjoyable and educational.

That's all from us this week, have a good one!

In other news this week, we're sad to be saying goodbye to our two interns who have both been with us over the Summer.

Harriet is returning to Leeds Metropolitan University to complete the final year of her degree in Event Management and Toby is starting a Management Degree at Goldsmith's University in London.

They have both been an invaluable part of the team and we hope that they will both be back in their respective holidays. So in tribute to them, we've blatantly pinched this article from the Huffington Post which we think they need to read.

2014-03-17-cutout.jpgUnless you intend on squatting in disused houses after you graduate, student life at university is the first and last time you'll enjoy such a carefree lifestyle. Your second and third year is usually spent sharing a house or flat away from campus with your friends and it's probably going to be the weirdest experience of your life so far. Some people have the time of their lives, some don't, and so if we're going to be honest about this, student living is a lot more than house parties and hot-boxing your landlord's conservatory.
Here are some of the less-than-great aspects to sharing a place with your fellow students...
1. Be prepared to see strangers' poo - a lot of it. There is a clearly a gap in education, be it at home or at school, in which correct flushing and cleaning after the use of a toilet was missed out. I hate to break it to you, but the chances are that if you yourself are not a culprit of leaving a caramel cave leading to the u-bend after using the toilet, someone else in your house definitely will be. Good luck bringing it up with your housemates too, it's not an easy conversation. "So, um, have you ever considered fibre in your diet...?"

2. There's an asshole that will only communicate with you through passive aggressive notes - and they think you're an asshole too. Unfortunately, this is me. I'm that asshole. Instead of trying to convey messages face-to-face to every person in my house, I find it easier to leave notes in places that everyone will see. Sometimes these notes are friendly, like last month when I thanked someone for cleaning the kitchen so well, to the less friendly, more passive aggressive one I left by my housemate's door last week telling him he was the loudest human being I've ever met and I hated living with him. Notes aren't a good route to a peaceful house dynamic, so try to stay on talking terms and generate some house rules that everyone agrees to...and that you can then use against them when they start being morons.

3. Sometimes people think it's funny to invite strangers in your house. A course-mate of mine got deliriously drunk one night at a house party and was found in an alley by some guys who then carried him to their house where they let him sleep on their couch and put a bucket by his head, just in case. That's a good story because he wasn't sick and made his way home in the morning. But sometimes it doesn't work out so well...

4. There will be someone totally incapable of sharing or considering others. Whether it's getting them to actually do their share of the housework or making them understand that washing-up liquid and toiletries don't magically appear, some people just do not want to think of anyone else but themselves. They steal your stuff, they use your plates and cutlery, and they'll probably deny everything if you accuse them. It's no surprise then that some students take revenge on these asshats.
A friend of mine told me,
"I have a housemate who absolutely refuses to contribute to the buying of commonly used household goods, whether it's hand-soap, toilet paper, or anything else that can and should be shared. He has a year's supply of soap, toilet paper, shampoo, fairy liquid, and every other utility stuff stockpiled in his room. [...] And yet he has a habit of using the things the rest of us share, without contributing to the cost. One day we realised we were losing an excessive amount of milk, so we decided to all chip in together and purchase strong laxative, poisoning our own milk supply.
Initially we thought it was going to be rather amusing giving someone an excruciating amount of the squirts, but then it just ended up like some shitty Bay of Pigs. There were no ideological victors that day, only someone who kept really needing to poo."
5. Hygiene - not everyone values it. You may be blessed with housemates who wash regularly, who clean their clothes and who enjoy a life less infested with microscopic bugs. But the sad fact is, at least one of your friends is secretly disgusting and you'll only find out when you live with them. A hotbed of grime and shame is the shower, as one student told me:
"I was horrified to find that as I stepped into the shower one morning, the previous user had not removed his... 'seed' from the shower wall. Luckily, we had two showers."
So buy some bleach, buy anti-bacterial everything, it could get pretty terrible.

6. Some people don't get privacy. Although I don't know anyone who leaves the door open when they masturbate, everything after that seems to be permitted in a student house. For example, there's going to be a night when, as you start to fall asleep, you'll begin to hear groans and grunts and the creaking of a bed...and you're going to have to find a way to sleep without horrifying images in your head. But, as a student, the likelihood is that you'll be groaning and grunting at some point too (apparently) and, depending on the sort of people you live with, it could go in a weird direction, as one student recounted to me:
"So, post-sex with my boyfriend, the condom falls on its way to the bin and the entire contents manage to empty themselves on my bed (ew, I know). I'm about to clean it up when my housemate knocks on the door and, before I can even reply, comes straight in. She'd just had an argument with her boyfriend and needed to talk. So she walks straight into my room, plonks her bum on the corner of my bed and lands right on the wet patch. Completely oblivious, she tells us her woes and I'm trying my best to keep a straight face and look concerned. It seemed to be working as she doesn't notice a thing. Until she got up. Her hands slowly moved to the back of her trousers and she looked confused and disgusted. I braced myself for confrontation but she said, "...Anyway, I'm off to my room. Thanks, guys. I needed that talk."
My housemate and I have never spoken about this incident since. Still, I'm pretty sure she knew what she sat in. Moral of the story, knock and wait."
7. Some people don't care how much noise they make, so try not to end up living with them. The slamming of doors, the thudding footsteps of the childish housemate who jumps down the stairs, the enthusiastic conversation at 2 o'clock in the morning - these are the new instruments in the soundtrack of your life. I have a housemate who seems unaware that arriving home at midnight singing out of tune and monotone about blueberries is simply not OK, he slams doors so hard the house shakes and he makes the kitchen into the worst percussion band you've ever heard. If you like constant noise, then go for it, live with those people and have a bunch of noisy fun, but when exams are looming, when that deadline is staring you in the face, let's hope everyone keeps it down when you need them to.

2014-03-17-10004063_10151926625875303_463626362_n.jpgMaybe none of this will happen to you, maybe just some of it will. I know people who live with people precisely because they're all noisy, or they're all messy, it's what draws them together and they enjoy their loud, mangy lives. And I know others who've escaped a crappy house and now live in a paradise. It's not all doom and gloom but sometimes you need a dose of the reality that a lot of people want to ignore. So my advice? Set down the ground rules, organise monthly house meetings where everyone can moan and complain about problems in the house, and, whatever you do, make sure you keep talking to each other. Why? Because if you don't you'll never understand why someone in your house decided to burn two fresh eggs in the box and leave them charred on the patio.

Seriously, what were they summoning?

So there you have it, a Student Guide for sure! Have a great week and we'll see you soon.

What's Floating Around? 1 September 2014

Welcome to another week at Cloud 9, this week we're following on from our previous blog. Last week we mentioned that Christmas Parties are starting to pop into people's minds, and we listed just a few different types of venues, great for the occasion. This week, we would like to help you with choosing the right venue for your event.

You may be thinking how hard can it be to find and book a venue? Well that depends on your needs, what you want the outcome to be and how much time you have to spare, so below, we have just a few tips that could help you choose the right venue...

Get Someone Else To Do It
Take advantage of a free venue finding service. A good corporate events company will source a venue for you and could even get you a few deals due to a rather relationship orientated industry. All you need to do is send them a brief of your event and they will do the rest for you!

Start The Search As Soon As Possible
Leaving it until the last minute isn't the best idea! Yes, you might get a last minute deal but it's a big risk to take. You may have to settle for a venue that doesn't have the specific requirements you need. You could also run the risk of being forced to book somewhere out of your budget range, in the wrong location and doesn't have the feel for your event, that you may have planned.

Location
The venue location needs to be at the heart of your event plan. It's important to take into consideration who your guests are and where they will be coming from, and ensure that the location is somewhere that makes sense for the bulk of your guests, as well as being a desirable spot.

Proximity To Motorway/Railway Station
Transport plays a huge role in choosing the right venue for your event. Booking a fabulous country house in hundreds of acres of parkland might tick the wow factor box, but delegates won't be impressed if getting there is a nightmare. Make sure the venue you choose is within close proximity to a motorway, railway station and an airport. Free parking is also essential for guests.

Size
The venue size and capacity must be just right, being too small will create overcrowding; whilst being too big will give a sense of emptiness and an under-attended, unsuccessful event. Most venues should have capacity numbers for all of their rooms, aim to be just slightly under the capacity limit, but never over and never far under, and you should be alright. Also, factor in any entertainment you may have in mind as they could need quite a substantial amount of space.

Star Rating And Budget
If you're planning on choosing a hotel as a venue for your event, think about the star rating. Will your budget stretch to a 4* or 5* venue? You might be better off with a good quality 3* hotel. Overspend on the venue and you'll have to cut back in other areas. Likewise with other venue's apart from hotels, have a picture of how you would like the event to be and your budget, with most venues you shouldn't have to pay room hire.

Room Layout
Choosing the right venue for your event involved thinking about room layout and seating plans. If you're planning a conference, product launch or presentation, you might want to consider a theatre-style layout. If it's a training day, a classroom style could be the way to go, if it's an awards ceremony or formal banqueting event, then you're more than likely going to want banqueting or cabaret style. Also, boardroom style is very popular for meetings.

What About Catering?
These days, hotels and conference venues offer more than tea and biscuits. Do you have any set ideas or requirements about catering? If so, choose somewhere that will accommodate your preferences. Be sure to remember that not everyone will be drinking alcohol, so provide non-alcoholic alternatives, and also remember to offer vegetarian alternatives to meat dishes, as well as catering for those with food allergies. If your event takes plaice in the summer, a BBQ or buffet lunch is a popular idea.

AV Equipment and Wi-Fi
Does the venue's day rate include use of AV equipment, if so what kind of equipment will you be able to use? Do they offer free Wi-Fi and can the speed cope with the events requirements, this is a question which is getting asked more and more often!

Outdoor Areas
If you're thinking of a team building day, think about activities. If you're planning to include country sports or driving activities on the agenda, you'll need a venue with a suitable outdoor area. Also it's a good idea to ask if the venue have a supplier or a preferred supplier.

Accommodation
Some delegates might want or need an over night stay. Check to see if the venue you're considering offers overnight accommodation and if they'll consider a special rate for your guests. You could also ask what their 24 hour rate is if they have accommodation.

The Visit
It is always advisable to visit the venue and check out all of the facilities for yourself. Try and have a look at some of the previous events that had been hosted at the venue and you will have a better understanding of the place. We'd always advice to check out the venue before booking it, so you can get the feel for it yourself.

If you would like any help with your next event, please contact the team on 0115 933 3811 or info@cloud9em.co.uk
