9.30am : Opening Address, Deborah Copeland CIPR YL Chair, followed by Jane Wilson CIPR CEO.

9.45am : Keynote: Gavin Forth, Global Marketing Director at ghd

10.30am: Panels : Delegates can select two mid morning panel sessions, please see below for details and an outline of the content on each panel.

Panel A Journalism: With Len Tingle, BBC Yorkshire, David Parkin, Business Desk & Alison Epstein, Freelance Journalist. Session Chair: Jeni Beattie.

The Journalism Panel will discuss the future of print media, examine the latest challenges facing local broadcast news, and the chilling effect of Leveson. Three of the North’s senior journalists from the world of print and broadcasting will talk about how they have adapted to be “fit for the future”, how they see mainstream and digital media integrating, and what effect they think Leveson might have on press regulation.
As the role of media relations is evolving rapidly, this Panel should give PR people some understanding of how to balance the needs of a multi-platform media and survive corporate pressure from “above” from those who want to control the message.
Rob Brown

Panel B Social Media: With Rob Brown, Managing Director, Staniforth, Ross Wigham, Communications manager, Northumberland County Council, Alex Abbotts, Head of Communications at Bromford Group, Dom Birch, Head of PR and Social Media, Asda.
Session Chair: Helen Standing.

The Social Media Panel will feature four leading thinkers on how social media and digital communications is evolving and changing the role of PR practitioners. The panellists will bring their different perspectives on the role of social media in corporate communications. They will share their expertise on how we can be ‘fit for the future’ and claim the social media space as communications, engagement and relationship specialists. The discussion will look at the opportunities and risks presented by new technologies and media and how they can be integrated into the communications mix. Drawing on their own experiences, they will advise on how to demonstrate the importance and impact of social media communications and predict what platforms, tools and techniques we will be using in the future.

Panel C Video Broadcasting: With Rob Pittam, Robin Hood Media, Jonathan Grice, Fruition Media & Daniel Kennedy, Video News Agency. Session Chair: Stuart Bruce.

The Video Broadcasting Panel will look at how today video is an increasingly important tool for public relations professionals. Traditional broadcasting has changed fundamentally with 24 hour rolling news, budget pressures on regional news and the rise of global news channels like Al-Jazeera. Online more than 24 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. Social video streaming tools enable anyone to broadcast live video and interact live with a potentially global audience. The panel will share its expertise and own experience to provide practical tips and advice on how you should be integrating video into your communications strategy. It will look at how video isn’t just for sexy consumer brands, but is just as important for B2B and corporate public relations.

In this session, Media Monitoring Director, Brian Merron and Deputy Manager of Media Evaluation, Matt Couchman discuss how much more PR and communications specialists can deliver beyond just numbers to set the track to the future.

Workshop A: Leaders of the Future with Professor Anne Gregory PHD, Director, Centre for Public Relations Studies, Leeds Business School, Leeds Metropolitan University.

Workshop B: Digital Futures with Paul Mallett, Digital Strategic Director and Board Director, Brass

I like my content augmented, wearable, percolated, hacked, embedded, scraped, collegiate and semantic....how about you? There’s a lot of hyperbole around the digital comms industry. What are the trends that are really shaping our lives and how can we apply new (and old) principles to the way we approach planning and delivery?

Workshop C: Create a virtual Creative Director with Andy Green.

Public Relations is going through a revolution - and you need to change to survive and succeed. But before you can change what you do, you need to change how you think. In this practical and fun session you will learn how to tell the difference from a critical from a systemic problem and discover different thinking tools to help you in your job. The session will show how the new CIPR Innovation & Creativity Toolkit will be the equivalent of a virtual Creativity Director for you and your team.

3.30pm Coffee & Refreshment Break

3.50pm Workshop A
Workshop B
Workshop C

4.30pm Keynote: Max Clifford

Max Clifford has been in the publicity business for well over 40 years. He has become as instantly recognisable as many of the stars he has represented over the years. His views and comments are sought on a daily basis for the world’s media on a wide range of subjects and he regularly appears on TV and radio as a guest on current affairs, news, documentaries and chat shows.

During the last 20 years he has become increasingly involved with many of the major front page stories in the British media. He now regularly breaks stories and stops stories in between orchestrating PR campaigns for a multitude of clients from all over the world and is also patron of two children’s charities and helps fundraise and supports many others. Often poacher and gamekeeper at the same time, he has helped save many a famous career from media damage and destruction. Increasingly during the last decade, he is approached by members of the public who seek out his help to get justice and awareness often when all other means have failed.

In 1970 Max Clifford created MCA his public relations company that he says has never to this day had to pitch for business. Max says: “The public relations side of my business is basically to set out and to create the best possible image for the many and diverse clients MCA represents. It’s interesting, stimulating, challenging and ever changing, and it’s infinitely preferable to having to work for a living”.

5.15pm Closing Address, Deborah Copeland, CIPR YL Chair
